Anyone scared of dying without leaving your mark in human history?

I'll be dead when I die, so caring about if I leave a mark when I'm unable to care seems somewhat pointless.

Given enough time our species will all be dead anyway (either self destruction or our star going super-nova) failing that the entire universe seems like it's going to contract.

Human history is already meaningless - let alone the actions of a single person.

(reading that back it sounds somewhat negative.... but correct :p)

'I knew a man who said, "death smiles at us all; all a man can do is smile back"'

I would like history to remember me, but I doubt it will. Death does not scare me in any way though. We each live life as we do, and then we die.

For those who say a single person will have no impact, the butterfly effect will make an interesting read.

Sometimes yes, but now knowing I'm going to be a father and that my legacy will live on through my child I'm not so worried.

Instead of concentrating on what I can do for society, my attitude has now changed to the point where I need to concentrate on making sure my child is going to be a good contribution to society instead. To me that is a great achievement, and something my other half and I can take pride in.

Seems a little easier to achieve at any rate. :D

True, but if everybody makes an impact - nobody is special (which is true).

The most "important" man in history could have done something as mundane as holding somebody up in a line - causing them to miss X appointment, which changed X, Y ,A , B , (you get my point) & prevented a thermonuclear war.

Did you really know a man?

I'm sure this is out of a book or a film, I remember reading or hearing it somewhere.

Its nice being part of the rich tapestry and having fun along the way. Not so bothered about leaving a mark.

No, I believe the human race should be wiped out, we're already going to leave our mark on our raped planet.

Our panel asked a survey of guests "What would you say just before going on a murderous rampage, and their responses are as follows. We're looking for "wiping out the human race" for 10 points, if it's there you're going home with the speedboat.

YES! It's there! <jumping and hugging family with Les Dennis leering in the background>

I think he was trying to be edgy but failed, murderous rampage is a good call for second place though.

Nope. They only thing I need to worry about is my family. Leaving a mark doesn't bother me, I don't have that big an ego.

I'm a published author (in paperback not just Kindle) so at least I have left mark there.

However, I have a wife, a son, and a grandson. I'm getting a wonderful dauther-in-law. What more do I need in life? (I have money)

the thing is, we will all leave evidence of our existence
your birth, marriage and death will be registered - your academic achievements, your bankruptcy, your crimes etc are all logged
in the current day and age your electronic trail will also be around for a long time
in the olden days you had to do something very special or crazy to remembered
