Talk to me about Surrey/Hampshire

Does it have to be a house?
£275k is not a lot for a 2 bed house in the areas I have knowledge of.
You can get them, but there is always a compromise, usually in location.

Well we've been living in a 1 bed flat for 3 years, and the gf REALLY wants a garden again, plus I want to have a catproofed garden for our currently indoor only cat.

Thanks again all, more food for thought.

I live in Fleet and have done for 17 years. I wouldn't live anywhere else in the UK.

Great balance of being easy to reach anywhere (good trains, Motorway links etc), but if you head west or south you are immediately in the countryside. You should be able to find stabling in the surrounding villages.

Whenever they do those best place to live surveys Hart district (in which Fleet is the main town) comes out either top or 2nd. Mainly as a result of low crime, good schools and long average life expectancy.

There is a lot of building going on around the town. Have a look at Edenbrook and Queen Elizabeth park if you want a new build. No idea what the prices are like.

Edenbrook is pricey, from I have seen anyway. I still really like Fleet and I'd be happy to live there again. We only moved due to work...and then to Wokingham which is basically a large, old Fleet!

I work at Heathside School and commute from Godalming, which is a smallish Saxon town about 15 minutes outside Guildford. I've lived here my whole life and there are very few places I'd rather live. Godalming is also on a direct line to Waterloo.

I live in Claygate and really love it. It is quiet, safe, peaceful, and has reasonable links by train, bus and road. The A3 is close. It only has a small parade so you do need to drive to Kingston or Esher to go shopping. It has a bit of a village atmosphere as they have christmas light turning on ceremonies, etc, etc.

The downsides are:

* Only 2 trains per hour into Waterloo (about 35 mins - parking at station for a fee).
* If you have kids then keep in mind that school catchment areas are difficult for senior schools.
* Not many shops.
* Not a cheap area for housing (but most places in your list aren't either).

I love it here though and have been here for about 6 years.

Avoid Farnborough and Ash Vale!! :p

I'm currently living in Farnborough (air show is annoying) and work in Weybridge. Train is only 20 mins and 3 stops away.

Fleet is ok I guess. Out of the list I would probably pick Guildford though.

Where in weybridge do you work, krooton?? :D

I live in Haslemere on the Surrey/Hampshire border, direct line to london and portsmouth the station is pretty much a 15mins walk from everywhere in the town, its cheaper than Guildford

I thought the Chelsea lot lived near Esher? Pretty sure JT does.

If you are concerned about journies to Sutton, Tonbridge or West Sussex half of those places do not seem like any nearer than places near Sutton ie Banstead, Ashtead, Leatherhead, etc ie near the A217 or near the M25. Once you're on those its an hour to Tonbridge I'd say, and similar to West Sussex (maybe a tad longer). Sutton can be a bit of a pain commuting to as the train lines aren't great, in my experience (my brother lives in Sutton and commutes to london).

Anyway:

Fleet - I've heard good things but not been there.
Farnborough - Been there a few times and didn't like the look of the place, seemed like an extension of Aldershot.
Brookwood - not been there
Woking (but not interested in it) - its a poor man's guildford!
Ash Vale - not been there
Worplesdon - or here..
Guildford - went to uni in Guildford, its a nice town but expensive.
Possibly a few stations south of Guildford
Hinchley Wood, Claygate, Oxshott and Cobham & Stoke D'Arbernon as also maybes

As others said Cobham will be expensive, and there's not much there. The neighbourhood has gone downhill a tad in recent years according to my work colleague, who moved out of there and moved to Box Hill (which is nice, as is Dorking, although both quite pricey).

If you see a Bentley parked in the disabled space on Esher high street that John Terry just popping out for a few things. It's ok as he's famous.

Which is how I knew he lives near Esher :D - he was always in the borough council building paying his parking fines.

I used to live in Walton-on-Thames and would vouch for it also. Only 1 stop from Weybridge on the train, 20 mins or so to Waterloo.

You should be able to pick up a 2 bed for around 275k alright. Only thing is, Walton station is on border of Walton / Hersham, about mile from Walton centre itself. Hersham would be a bit cheaper but no so nice.

Also just over the other side of the river in Shepperton (about a mile-ish away) there's plenty of places that stable Horses. Can think of 4-5 off the top my head. But no rail link from Shepperton to Weybridge.

+1 theres too many of us in Farnborough :p

Farnborough is good and has good rail links with Farnborough(Main) for Weybridge and Farnborough (North) for Reading/Gatwick. Yes as has been said it can be annoying during the airshow but you get used to it.

Fleet is really nice, as is a lot of Surrey.

I'd avoid Guildford as you're paying a premium for the shops/fast train into London and the traffic is terrible.

TBH, anywhere apart from Aldershot and Staines is of an acceptable standard in that part of the commuter belt.

But you're still lame for moving out of London. :p

I've recently moved from Farnborough sixth form area to now right next to the airport... Like literally 30 seconds walk away  thank god I'll be moving out of Farnborough before the next airshow in 2014 :p

Not sure I could live that close to the airport, I'm about a 1.5 miles from the 6th form, down Medway Drive.

Have you considered the Ashtead/Leatherhead/Epsom areas?

Probably slightly cheaper than some of the other places mentioned (depending where you look - so you may get more for your money) still with great transport links and no problem with stabling a horse.

Also roughly in the middle of Weybridge and Sutton.
