Virgin Media Discussion Thread

What I don't get is why the hell do virgin keep upping everyones speeds when the infrastructure can't handle it? I'd rather have no limits and a slower overall speed. Offering out 100mb download speeds is just asking for trouble and thats half the reason we all now get throttled if we go over the limits. 30mb should be enough for anyone imo.

Hear hear!

Am I misreading the new traffic management? it sounds better than what it was. Rarely did I ever hit the traffic management, I'm a heavy downloader, I just time most of it at night, and even at prime time my usenet connection still hits 66Mb/s on my 60Mb service. Previously when I did on the rare time hit the limit, the traffic management was 50%, and 30 Mb is very reasonable still. The new traffic management says it's only a 40% reduction, and not only that but if you change your downloading behaviour you will exit the speed reduction sooner, so if you are doing a steam download and only just barely scratch the limit, rather than being hit for the full 5 hours you should be back to normal sooner.

This is normal for mine :/ It's been bad like this since Christmas when the speeds were doubled in my area. Made multiple phone calls often cut off before even getting through to someone.
Having to wait on hold for upto 45minutes on one occasion. When I do get through to someone I'm on the phone for an hour or more while they tell me that there is nothing wrong with my connection.

The fact is they just start doing trace routes and pings but the issue is it's not consistent. You could check one minute and get a 20ms ping and then run it again and see 150/300ms or lost packets.
Two people I spoke to admitted that there is a "slight" problem and its caused by over utilisation which was obvious anyway considering this happens at peak times. When I ask why the ping is fluctuating
badly on the first hops on the virgin network itself they don't give me an answer. I was told they couldn't raise it to the network team since it was below the threshold most of the time.

So in the evenings I can't game online without major lag and rubber banding. Can't use VOIP because my voice constantly breaks up or has a major delay.
Can't stream iPlayer or youtube and browsing the web is slow with timeout's and errors.

I'm so frustrated, I can't switch to Infinity because it isn't in my area. ADSL is a possibility however my speed estimate isn't good at all and virgin is doing sweet FA about my issue.
I'm on 100MB. Been with them since the NTL days and up until last year can't say as I'd really ever had any problems at all. This week it's been awful in the day as well with it being the easter holidays.

Ask for a bill reduction , your problem is common, there is no fix as they simply can't permission to dig up roads.

Perhaps look into SP games or RPG ones if the ping is enough for those.

I'm in the same position, no fibre options here either.

edit/ im under the impression that the problem is worse is ex NTL telewest regions from speaking to their CS

Interesting to know and wouldn't surprise me. I stopped playing BF3 with my mate in the evenings and switched to TERA as the netcode is a bit more forgiving but even with that I've had a few dodgey moments.

It's annoying because out of peak times it's fine and I can happily download at say 10-12MB/s. I had a bill reduction of £20 for one of the months but have yet to sort anything since. I wondered where I stand with regards to getting some compensation each month. I would assume they have to agree that I'm not getting a good experience at the time to give me something however I've had occasions where I ring and they can't actually see any problem even though I'm seeing silly pings and getting problems at my end.

Not even ADSL2+ ?

Yes but due to the distance from the exchange I should imagine I'd be lucky to get 10Mbps and the upload speed isn't much at all. It's not really an option for me hence why I've stuck with virgin for the past months and just get things done at different times where possible but I know it's a joke considering what it costs and the fact it's meant to be their top level connection.

Yeah I agree. I don't understand why Virgin Media still over-charging for 30 Meg standalone broadband at £27.50 without discount (the website say £22.50) but virgin media say on the phone it will cost £27.50. Rip off virgin media and even worse their upload is terrible stay at 2Mbps.

30 Meg should be around £15 by now with virgin media.

Channel4-OD and BBCiPlayer started buffing for me yesterday (not enough bandwidth) causing multiple refreshes just to complete watching something, is this the old streaming issue returning, or the new implemented STM :(

Anyone else started suffering with online streaming again ?

Are you sure it's not over utilisation causing it, like it is for me?
If you notice it happening try a pingtest or maybe setup a thinkbroadband monitor.

Thanks for the reply, it was OK last night, in fact i was able to watch BBCiPlayer in HD, with no caching or stalling, so my issue must have been a one off the previous night.
