Small/med, rapid, pretty, toys, under £7k?

save up for the repair bill or do the work myself

Has this thread really moved onto probably the cheapest facelift M3 in the country with snippets like that added in for additional lulz?

You realise that even if absolutely nothing breaks on it at all even a scheduled service like an Inspection 1 is £600-700 depending on the competency of the place that does it, right?

Anyway, whatever. £7k, saving up for repair bills, not a huge budget for maintenance, maybe a 330d. Definately sounds like the right time to buy a cheap M3.

SIGH. Just do what you want.

I just checked back, you were suggesting the 350z.

I don't like them because:

not a fan of the styling, looks bloated to me...

Brother has the top of the range model - would never hear the end of it, also wouldn't want to have the same car as him on general principle.

:D Thanks Dad!

In all seriousness, did I miss one of your comments/suggestions? If so I am genuinely sorry but the thread got a bit crazy.

No I just saw about stretching to an E46 M3 and found it utterly hilarious. Good luck, you'll need every last bit.

I just put m3 into ebay and sorted by closest first, came to that one and quite liked the look of it... gods honest truth!

Glad Im entertaining you, there were a few people that suggested the e46 m3 after my OP. I kinda ignored them as I hadn't checked how much they currently cost and thought insurance would still be astronomical, but its quite reasonable and purchase prices seem to have dropped off since I last looked.

How much would you suggest spending on an e46 m3? Oh and I don't particularly need a facelift model.

Seriously, spend a couple of evenings researching common problems with the M3 and see what you think then. There's no point going around in circles for several more pages here.

If its before 06 and less bhp its £275

If its after 07 with the more powerful engine then its £475

its a considerable extra outlay every year which will never go away, im convinced I can get something that was built before 06 and satisfies my needs

to be honest I havent checked out the less powerful cheaper to tax version as my brother tells me the newer one is "the one to have"

Edit: but I will!

I have owned a 56 plate facelift mode for just over a year, so I know how the tax works. My point is that if £200 a year is 'considerable extra outlay' for then you should not be looking at these cars in the first place.

Someone put a list of what their M3 cost over 2 years in repairs/services and tyres.

It was a silly amount, hopefully that person will see this and repost it.

You clearly need to be sectioned, thinking an M3 is do-able on a 7k budget with cheapish maintenance. Will be suprised if fox even bothers to reply.

Also again, 24 and a M3. Surely insurance would laugh at you?

Well I have a Z4M which has the same engine and similar consumables so I can let you know my spend for the last 12 months. Please no one pick me up on precise figures as this will be to the nearest £50 from memory.

2x new rear tyres at £220 a corner
New front disc brakes was about £200 a pair
Rear disc brakes were more like £250 a pair
Pads all round was about £150
Inspection 2 service £800
Bi-annual brake fluid service £150

So that's about £2k on routine stuff, although it was probably a more expensive year than normal on consumables but then nothing went wrong either so it probably representative of what you need to have on hand every year.

Thanks for the info, were those prices just for parts or with labour included?

I see nothing too scary there.

Yeah I would be interested to see that, Ive already said the budget can be increased to 8K or possibly more for the right car.

Im 25 on Tuesday and going by quotes, they don't seem too bad, the saving I make on tax can go towards insurance ;)

Looking into Vanos, valve clearances and cooling system atm

Service and tyres included labour. Brakes are just parts - probably a couple of hundred quid in labour.

How many miles was that ?

Not many - 4,000 or so in the year, but for me I need servicing every two years (albeit normally interim oil services) because I do so little mileage and the schedule requires something doing bi-annually regardless.

Yeah I would be the same I think.

I just read about checking/adjusting valve clearances, and swapping vanos seals, Id be ok doing either myself.

Any other expensive common problems? a few of you guys run m54s, ever had any problems or major outlays?
