I know the release is a long while off yet (Fall '13) but I promised myself that after playing BF3 on PS3 (Which is now dead) that I would next move back to PC. I havent really been paying attention to pc building for a few years now so wondering what I would spec I would need to play the modern releases at a pretty decent res. Not really looking to spend more than £750.

At first I thought I will just buy a prebuilt system from Overclockers etc but now wondering what I can realistically salvage from my 5yr old (mostly)system:

Cooler Master RC-1000 Cosmos Silent Full Tower Case
Asus P5K-E WiFi Intel P35 (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard
Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 LGA775 'Wolfdale' 3.00GHz (1333FSB) - Retail
Pioneer DVR-215DBK 20x DVD±RW SATA Dual Layer ReWriter (Black) - OEM
Crucial Ballistix 2GB (2x1GB) DDR2 PC2-8500C5 1066MHz Dual Channel
Corsair HX 620W ATX Modular SLI Compliant Power Supply (CMPSU-620HXUK)
Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro CPU Cooler (Socket LGA775)
GeForce GT430 1024MB GDDR3 PCI-Express Graphics Card
OCZ 120G Agility 3 120GB SATA III 2.5 inch SSD

RAM, CPU, Cooler, Mobo and GFX I clearly need to ditch. But the Case, PSU and SSD should still be sufficient right? So with that in mind what would you recommend for my £750 budget? I would probably replace my ageing Samsung 22" monitor with a 120HZ 24" but thats further down the line.

Thanks
Simon

Unless you need the system now I would wait a bit for more information to be released about required specs etc.

Also there are rumours that AMD may start to bundle the game in with graphics cards so it may be worth holding on for more information about that.

well if i was upgrading it, i'd push the boat out, here's my spec

1 x Gigabyte ATi Radeon HD 7950 Windforce 3X 3072MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card with Crysis 3 & Bioshock PC Games £239.99
1 x Intel Core i7-3820 3.60GHz (Sandybridge-E) Socket LGA2011 Processor - OEM £235.99
1 x Gigabyte X79-UD3 Intel X79 (Socket 2011) DDR3 Motherboard £179.99
1 x Kingston HyperX Genesis 16GB (4x4GB) DDR3 PC3-14900C9 1866MHz Dual/Quad Channel Kit £99.95
1 x Antec Kúhler H2O 620 Series 4 CPU Watercooler (Socket Intel LGA 1155 / 1156 / 1366 / 2011 / AMD AM2 / AM3 / AM2+ / AM3+) £47.99
Total : £815.90 (includes shipping : £10.00).

keep the psu and sdd and case etc, dvdrw and o/s and just update the bits that need a boost, enjoy, over budget, but worth the extra for me

I would wait till nearer the time. Haswell will be out then which may be the better option for an upgrade. Also as mentioned, BF4 may come bundled with a GFX card. Stick with an i5, no need for an i7 in a gaming rig.

I would be aiming for a Radeon 7970 at least and as for the CPU, IB prices will drop when Haswell comes out

No need for an i7-3820, 3570k will be fine and spend the saving towards the 7970

If AMD do the same as they did with Crysis 3 and get EA / Dice to make BF4 so it makes better use of more than 4 threads so it works well with the FX 8 core CPUs then extra threads offered by an i7 may be worth the extra cost.

must agree with you, the i5 and quad core won't cut it much more with the latest games, and may even slow down the better cards, for me the next upgrades need to be 6 cores or more and the extra power the i7 or AMD chips have to offer.

i won't be spec'ing any more i5 unless a low to medium budget is needed, as the cost is high atm with the i7 being a good price

the i5 doesn't cut it for latest games? You must be having a laugh :p

By the time more games start using HT & more cores there will be better processors out..

YOUR BASKET
1 x Gigabyte ATI Radeon HD 7970 Windforce 3X 3072MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card with Crysis 3 & Bioshock PC Games £323.99
1 x Intel Core i5-3570K 3.40GHz (Ivybridge) Socket LGA1155 Processor (77W) - OEM £187.99
1 x Gigabyte Z77X-D3H Intel Z77 (Socket 1155) DDR3 Motherboard £107.99
1 x Avexir MPower Yellow Series 16GB (2x8GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C10 1600MHz Dual Channel Memory Kit (AVD3U16001008G-2CM) £83.99
1 x Phanteks PH-TC14PE CPU Cooler - Silver (Socket 775 / 1155 / 1156 / 1366 / 2011 / AM2 / AM2+ / AM3 / FM1 / FM2) £66.98
Total : £782.94 (includes shipping : £10.00).

This motherboard will allow room for another graphics card and the 16GB RAM won't need to be touched

Its hinted that 64 bit OS for Bf4 so its no stretch to say a 6 core is a better option but by no means is a 4core a slouch as the fps is likely to be not that far off one another. Boils down to OC and price.
since october is far away, I would wait for any bigger upgrades until beta been out a while.

Don't quite see how you make that up Zak. The only time an i5 is struggling right now is when you running at least 2 high end GPU's and even then you'll run out of graphical grunt before the CPU hits the fps hard.

all the highest score are from i7, in all the latest games, single or dual card used, don't need to say any more tbh, don't make it up as i go along, just quoting the facts.

not knocking i5 either, great OC chips but price is high atm so might as well go and spend a bit more and get a i7, that's all im saying

Thanks to all for replies.

Yeah I wont be diving in that soon just looking at what I can expect to get for that budget.

Everyone recommended ATI gfx so are they generally better performance for the money or just tend to perform better with the Battlefield games?

Cheers

Yep due to the games they throw in with the card they are definitely better value for money :)

The 3770k is higher clocked than the 3570k, even if you weren't using HT, it'd still bench better.

Not saying the HT won't help, but yeah.

It'd definitely help maintain those minimums, that's for sure.
