Teachers in some UK schools are banning children from making best friends, The Sun reported earlier this week, in order to spare them the pain of losing a friend after a falling-out.

Instead, children are encouraged to play in large groups.

"Educational psychologist Gaynor Sbuttoni said the policy has been used at schools in Kingston, South West London, and Surrey," the Sun's Harry Hawkins reported.

"I have noticed that teachers tell children they shouldn't have a best friend and that everyone should play together," she said.

"They are doing it because they want to save the child the pain of splitting up from their best friend. But it is natural for some children to want a best friend. If they break up, they have to feel the pain because they're learning to deal with it," Sbuttoni added.

"I don't think it is widespread but it is clearly happening. It seems bizarre," said Russell Hobby, of the National Association of Head Teachers, who confirmed the bans.

"I don't see how you can stop people from forming close friendships. We make and lose friends throughout our lives," he said.

Chris McGovern, a spokesman for the Campaign for Real Education, called the policy "ridiculous" and said the policy was robbing children of their childhood.

"Children take things very seriously and if you tell them they can't have a best friend it can be seriously damaging to them. They need to learn about relationships," he added.

Remember, we are supposed to believe that educators, not parents, know what's best for children.

So if it isn't lethal flapjack its now making best friends.

Stupid country.

Thanks for posting, I've given this some thought and after due consideration I think the most appropriate response is to escalate to Level 3 Outrage and we'll see where it goes from there.

To be honest this sort of thing is most likely to be instigated in the schools the OP was thinking about sending his kids to the other week.

A biased article, based on a biased article based on hearsay and conjecture.
Someone give Joe a Pulitzer quick!

In my view we should put in law just the first bit.

UK Schools Ban Children.

ignore the making friends bit they can do that with all their spare time when they're not down pit or up chimneys.

I left school at 12-13 except for a few months here and there and it never did me any harm.

Learnt more down the pub with dad every night and first few years of work than I ever did at school.

Was earning over k50 before an accident disabled me.

When I gain I gain independence for Warwickshire (our vote is the day after the Scottish independence vote next year)

I am going to only allow triangular schools with razor sharp points at the corners, cover the play-fields in woodland and teach the children to hunt truffles.

You must admit there are very few truffle hunters in the yellow pages and I see it as a growth area.
