[PCWORLD] AMD provides a sneak peek at its Radeon HD 7990

Well I was top for a few days and then played games instead :(

Not sure about the days part, but I did notice you rapidly moved up quite a few places very recently.

You will need to grab some hardware points, i.e. overclock those cards, if you want to maintain your position. Otherwise, the next Joe Bloggs with the latest hardware will just overtake you.

don't those images of hwbot league list competitors names?

It lists whatever name you choose to go by, there's no need to use real names unless competing in an event that requires it. Even then, they would probably prefer the name your are generally known by, would not be much advertising for the organiser's products, otherwise.

No I was meaning that it lists competitor websites, for example A*** PC is a definite OCUK competitor.

I'm sure they aren't that bothered, 8pack has links to HWbot and he works for OCUK.

It's mainly directly linking hardware from competitors that they don't like.

I await overclocking challengers, patiently. :p

We aren't really listing them in the context of them being commercial competitors, at least not in the sense of selling; as there are no products mentioned.

Most certainly as competing overclocking teams, however. ;)

Seems a pointless release unless it undercuts the current 7990s by a fair amount, with the 7970s increasing in price recently (the one ive got is now £50 more expensive for some reason) and with the release of Titan at its current price i can see it costing £700+ once the price comes down to what it should be.

?? i though the 7990 was released ages ago http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-007-OE

isnt this just another custom overclocked version like the ares 2?

if they've improved it in someway they should call it something else like the 7995 or something!

AMD never released a 7990, they were built and released by board partners.
The old 7990's use Tahiti XT chips, the new card will be using Tahiti XT2 which allows for higher clocks at lower voltage hence only 2 8 pin power connectors instead of 3.
Bit of info here http://www.legitreviews.com/news/15323/

looks really cheap tbh. the 690 and Titan looks way nicer.

I hope thats just a press version and they come out with a less plastic looking cooler

None of that really matters when all you see is a tiny portion of the top of the card in most modern cases anyway. I'd rather have an ugly cooler with great cooler capability that's quiet than a loud POS one that looks good.

Amd have been behind NVidia on reference cooling this generation in terms of noise levels and the third party coolers have saved the day more often than not. Theres a 10db level difference between a 680 and 7970GE under load on the reference models. That's quite a lot for someone like me who values a quiet computer lol.

I really do hope its quiet though as they'll use the same sort of cooling on their next series of cards then, which is great for everyone.

What is it with AMD people, Fraps shows AMD cards have worse stutter, can't fix it so let's just say Fraps isn't valid anymore. Don't have a Titan-beater so let's start calling a multi-GPU card a single.

Pretty much everything you said is wrong apart from FRAPS showing worse stutter.

Here are some FRAPS frame-time graphs from Tomb Raider level Summit Forest. I used various RadeonPro settings on a 7950 Crossfire setup to demonstrate how these settings affect frame-times and micro-stutter. All tests were done at 2560x1600 resolution with Ultra preset, Shadows set to ultra and DOF off.

First we have the default Crossfire experience without any custom RadeonPro profiles and vsync off. RadeonPro was not running during this test. Clearly the experience here is unacceptable, it was playable in parts but at times the FPS looked very poor.

Next we see the exact same run through only now we have loaded RadeonPro with a custom profile to set an FPS cap of 50. Vsync is off and no briple buffering. Much better experience, I have done nothing other than add an FPS cap and the experience is far, far better.

Finally we look at the same run through but now I have set vsync on, triple buffering on and the experience again is far more playable than the default out of the box settings.

So while some people will not like the idea of deliberately reducing performance by ~15%-30% these tweaks do make the a game far more playable and enjoyable experience. This kind of difference due to a few RadeonPro tweaks is not unique to Tomb Raider.

Some important points.

Crossfire is a stuttery mess out of the box and AMD need to get their act together.
Crossfire deserves a lot of the negative press it has received
But it need not be a pointless waste of money
Crossfire stutter can be fixed/improved as long as you know what settings to play with in RadeonPro to get the best out of it.
To put the 50 FPS capped graph into perspective this is actually ~66% faster than a single GTX 680 or HD 7970 at the same settings. Taken from HardOCP recent TR performance review here.
It should be noted that [H] stated neither the GTX 680 or HD 7970 GE were playable at these settings. (Note the results from the [H] review were taken from a different level but from an older version of the game and slightly older drivers).
SLI also causes microstutter and in many cases does require tweaking to fix excessive stutter, but it is still working far better out of the box.

Thats great info, I've been using D3DOverider to limit frames and its very smooth. Where is the FPS limiter in RadeonPro? I've played around with the refresh rate and locking the FPS to that but its not as smooth. Is there an FPS limiter elsewhere in the program?

have you read this thread / articles yet? some interesting reading, it may be that FRAPS is not all that accurate anyway, even when it's telling you everything is fine...
