800w Power Supply

Hi and ty for reading.

I'm considering doubling up on my GPU setup but i'm not entirely sure whether my Power supply will be enough. Also the supply is not even a expensive make or model, is this much of a concern for me?. Could anyone tell me if i should be looking to replace it before buying the 2nd card. And if so with what supply? I have the above setup in a CM HAF-X case and when i put it together i remember there being a long reach for the ATX cable, it only just fit, so if i do need a new supply for my plans then good length on cables must be a factor also.

Many thanks for any responses.

What is your full spec, and what exactly is it you are asking? What the minimum power supply you should buy is?

Sorry RJC i submitted my post by accident before finishing it.

Doh! :D

As your PSU is not a quality unit I would not risk it.

A quality branded 750w PSU would be ample.

Some options below:

YOUR BASKET
1 x Seasonic X-Series 750w '80 Plus Gold' Modular Power Supply £124.99
1 x Corsair Enthusiast Series TX750M High Performance 750W '80 Plus Bronze' Modular Power Supply (CP-9020040-UK) £99.98
1 x XFX 850W XXX Edition Modular '80 Plus Silver' Power Supply £89.99
Total : £327.56 (includes shipping : £10.50).

Yes I know, I read that bit. But FSP Group PSU's are often discarded as being 'cheap rubbish PSUs', but they would share the same internals as some more expensive 'branded' units. Whereas something like an 'Alpine' or a 'Powercool' should not be touched with a barge pole :p

Sorry i went afk. My current PSU is EVO LABS. Model i'm not sure it just says Pentium P4 Model on the side of it. It is fully modular however, I just didn't pay much for it at the time from a backstreet PC shop.

Just looked at prices for Eco Labs pretty much £20 for a 750w model!!!

That's a nasty piece of tat. I'm always amazed how many people skimp on a power supply. It's a crucial part of any PC and should be given the same respect as any other component.

Not sure who the OEM for Evo Labs are. Probably best to steer clear though, just to be on the safe side. They seem to be 'dangerously' cheap. :p

Some so called 'unbranded' PSU's like FSP group units are often very high quality though, and some branded units are not. Its all about the OEM, and the quality of the parts inside. Not the brand name, quality of the paint job and cable braid.

My PSU looks fairly sleek from the outside, and it is weighty and has good quality cables. Bearing that in mind, as well as the fact that it is a 700W Modular OCZ, you would be forgiven for thinking that it is a good PSU right? But it is a re-branded 650W Sirtec, with just 532W (IIRC) on the +12V rails. Review samples, when loaded up to the maximum rated power of 700W essentially blew up, and the same thing happened at 650W as well.

That said, I do trust it enough to power my rig under load 24/7, but I wouldn't risk running a second GPU on it.

Thankfully OCZ have stepped up their game now :D

*edit* wow, gotta love the tangents I go on when i'm tired

Well thnx for your input guys. If 100 pound is the cost of peace of mind then i guess it needs be done. I hear scary stories about PSU failures and i've spent too much in my system for it to go up in smoke.
