Ok i am a big newbie at building my own pc (never done it before but i want to start somewhere) I have £1200 (give or take) budget. I basically don't want to think about upgrading for atleast a few years anyway. Some things to note.

The pc will be for gaming.
I want to play high end games with smooth framerate (farcry3 bioshock skyrim bf3-4 ect)
I would like windows 7 OS.
I don't need monitor mouse or keyboard.
And i really don't need lots and lots of storage. Just enough to install some games ect and store a few movies.
Oh and forgot to mention would prefer Intel over AMD. Again just sticking with what i know.

The case does not need to be fancy or cool in anyway with bright colours. Just something that does the job and doesnt let too much dust in.

Cheers guys :)

EDIT again - Switched to AMD card on your advice

Stuck with Intel for the board and CPU but the cards are really the best value and performance for the money.
No aftermarket cooler since you didn't mention overclocking but you can upgrade the stock cooler at a later date and if you ran out of space you can easily add another hdd too.
Easily modifiable depending on what you like and dislike about the build.

used the normal 840 not the pro, as most most tell the difference unless you benchmark them.
cases are like shoes, as long as they fit etc, as it's a box, most let dust in, getting filters stops some, but cost to keep replacing then, better to just buy a can or air and clean them every few months, keeps cpu fan and psu fans cleaner and working better, plus will give them all a longer life.
don't like the video card, think amd offers better value for money v power/speed etc, but did as asked, hope you enjoy your pc which ever spec you choose

Don't think that works mate. The additional speed (250mb/s) is noticeable just using the PC on a day to day basis. Boot speed, shutdown speed, loading screen for games, transfer speeds, install speeds, it's not just a benching thing. Immediately noticed a difference with a firmware update on my Vertex4.

This would also be my recommendation:

well i use 2 adata 256gb sdd. not the greatest speed ones, but great value, had a friends pc built by OC and that came with samsung pro 840 256gb in it, no difference in boot time, maybe be a second max, but not all the time tbh, depends on boot order, sometimes it was quicker, sometimes not.

any other difference is down to user eye and programs used, i game, so no difference, do the numbers, ie benchmark it in windows first, and see score, then a full suite test like benchmark pro from passmark, yes, but not that much tbh worth the extra with a good system, maybe more in a slower one yes

speeds freaks like max speed, so buy the faster one, raid0 it, buy a pcie sdd card if your that unhappy with a standard speed sdd, but like i said, for most, unless you had another one in another box side by side, none would tell the difference

opinion only, posters choice on price and budget and parts used. i'd spend it elsewhere, as couldn't care less if it booted 1 second quicker or not

good old tom, just some light reading on a few myths, don't like to prove a point or give links either, but seems a fair few agree

OK this is what i have been working with for now. Any changes you guys think i should make then by all means. Got a few questions about my choices.

First off water cooling makes me nervous. Is there more information about this? Or should i just stick with the stock one for now?
Second i wanted to go for the 680 card but is there really a big difference between that and the 670?

Oh i know its over my budget but its ok to go over it a little :)

Cheers guys ;)

You've said you want to stick with nVidia, but out side of sticking to what you know there isn't really a practical reason to do so.

By going for nVidia you are spending more money for less performance than if you bought AMD. In fact, you could buy 2x 7950s for only slightly more than that GTX680 you have chosen, and 2x 7950s are significantly faster.

@zakblood maybe you should stop doing spec me threads as more often than not you tend to be giving out bad advice. Someone seems to call you out on your spec in such threads. Opinion is all well and good but some people may buy on your bad advice.

Just curious why you have added the Akasa adaptor to your choices? Will it be something that is needed?

The Z9 U3 has USB3 ports but like several other "budget" midrange cases the USB3 ports have a male-A USB connector. The adapter was to internalise the cables rather than run them out the back of the case and plug them back into the rear of the mobo. It's not essential but just makes things look tidier. I own the Z9 Plus, fine starters case or for modders but the U3 is much better and what I would buy today with my cash.

I used a closed loop water cooler in the Prodigy because the mobo is so tiny fitting tower air coolers can be tricky as they could overhang the PCI-Express lane for the GPU (thats bad obviously). In a midi tower case you can use a good value air cooler just fine :)

I used the M power Z77 mobo as it allows Xfire/SLi, it also includes wifi and bluetooth and has some other nice freebies to help justify the cash. 16GB of RAM at a decent price, colour coded to the mobo nicely too :) If you want a storage HDD look at THIS, it has twice the capacity of what you have picked for not much more cash ;)

I think this is what i will go for. Thanks for the help honosuseri. I updated the seagate and i definetly think its worth it. Went back to the Intel mobo and the case you linked was out of stock so just stuck with the z9 fan controller one. (Plus its on offer :P)

Just need to know that this all works now and i am ready and good to go on ordering all this. :)

The Z9 plus doesn't have USB3 ports, so in turn you don't need the adapter fella. I own the case myself and the mesh will let in dust. You can order stuff that is OOS like the U3, the delivery will just be delayed till everything is back in stock.

I wouldn't bother with that CLC either tbh, the air heatsink I used is just as good and better value for money.

Tweaked it with a much better case that can take a decent CLC if you are set on that. I realise I have left the OS out but you can download the Windows 8 Enterprise (Evaluation) Edition for free and use it for 3 months. Then you can make an informed decision over what OS to pay out for or just use a 128GB SSD and use the saved cash for the OS ;)

Ach ill just stick with it and do some overtime at work or something haha. Big thanks for the help i will go ahead and order this now.

Suppose now i need to read some of the guidies on here about installing everything and getting everything updated. Thanks again guys.

Well that spec is great but you should really do your homework and read reviews and such before ordering.

That should help you through the basics. Come back if you need any help there are plenty of forum members who will offer advice and tips :)
