My TV has just decided to turn it's self off and the power light is blinking seven times, I've looked up the fault reference and it doesn't really mean much to me. I've turned the power off at the wall and hoping that it might come back on tomorrow, though as the fault is nick named the 7 blinks of death I'm not holding out much hope. Has anyone else had this problem and did it go away by itself?

Luckily I bought it from John Lewis so I have the 5 year warranty but I won't be able able to get hold of them until at least Monday if not Tuesday. That brings me to my second question. Has anyone used John Lewis' extended warranty? I'm outside of the initial manufactures 12 months so will it be sent off to be fixed or just replaced?

Sounds like an easy fix but I daren't open it up as I don't want to void the warranty.
Hmm... They all sound like easy fixes.... That is until you get into in and then realise there's more to it than swapping a board or changing a capacitor. :(

7 blinks is the the code for problems with two boards responsible for driving the screen. Since your TV is under a JL warranty then you don't really have to worry about that any deeper. All you really need is to call them to arrange for a service call and then go with the flow. I would expect that they'll repair rather than replace or refund.

Oh, and a final thought on "Has anyone else had this problem and did it go away by itself?".... No, these things never fix themselves. It's not like your telly stubbed its toe on the bed, but eventually it will heal. If components go faulty then they stay faulty. If they're intermittent then environmental conditions could change to make it less likely that the problem occurs. But eventually the part will croak as well.

Of course, faults can be misdiagnosed too. I'm repairing a supposedly "faulty" HDD at the moment. A couple of folk looked at it before me. Both said the drive was broken. What they missed was that it was spanned. The drive is fine and I'm backing up the data right now much to the joy of the owner who had been told all was lost. It's unlikely you got a bad diagnosis on your TV. I'm simply saying that for something to appear as if it's fixed itself then it's highly likely that the fault finding was bad, not the gear. A broken component stays a broken component.

Actually my last TV a Sony Bravia had a mis diognosis which in itself was a common fault, leaving it off over night fixed it but as I found out this morning thats not the case with this set but worth a try. I'll be calling JL tomorrow and hopefully their service department will be open. Do they give a loan set? Otherwise I'll be hudled around a 21" set.

Spoke to JL and it's being picked up by a company called Gogglebox on Thursday. In the mean time...

Spoke to the repair company today and JL have accepted the quote for repair and they are apparently replacing one of the boards and the panel itself. I'm quite surprised as I thought a new panel would write it off. Looks like it will be another week before I get it back though.

Finally got my set back this week. The fix ended up being the panel and two boards, though they didn't say which ones. They didn't diagnose a problem with the second board until they had fitted the new panel so they had to wait all over again to get another part. I did give JL a call last week and expressed that I thought it was taking too long and they said one way or another I would have a TV back after 4 weeks max which I thought was good of them.
