Friend of mine wants to buy a pug 206 2.0 petrol.

He's in need of a run around and he's been offered the mentioned car.

It's got 91k on the clock
Plenty tread on tyres
2 months tax
MOT runs out in 6 months.
4 new alloys (apparently costing £400)
Belts been done.

He's a 50 year old guy and my friend knows him, it was his wife's car apparently. He's had it for 2.5 years.

He wants £350 for it.

Now my friend is desperately wanting to buy it and I think it's a terrible idea. Aren't these things supposed to be terrible and seriously flawed? Economy motoring is his priority, what sort of bills will this throw up in the coming months.

He's very short on cash and needs a car ASAP... I feel this is clouding his better judgement.

Any words of wisdom? I can't tell him exactly why not to get it, maybe you lot can.

Its a 206 ... its always going to be a bad idea! TBH that one doesn't sound bad, esp for £350. You wouldn't get much other car for that so its prob not too bad, that said they are just nasty cars!

Check advisories online for the MOT, see what it said or the form it's printed on. 206's ain't great But they're not that bad either IMHO... and for £350 notes??? If in good nick, that's a nice price for a solid car.

Can't really be done at £350, you'd get at least £150 scrap.

These are not great - main mechanical issues are suspension and electrics. The cabin materials and build are poor but for £350 I'd be prepared to live with it.

If it drives alright and has been well maintained I'd go for it. At this money you just buy on condition and bin it if there's a big bill.

2.0 Petrol is the GTI either 138 or 180 I think.

They will have some parts in the interior that would sell for more then £350 in total.

Thanks for the advice all. Looks like I was a bit hasty in dismissing it then. For £350 I suppose can't be bad.

Thanks again.

I've encouraged him to take it a test drive.

A good check of the steering and driveshafts, tell him to stop, put car on full lock both left and right and just slowly accerate, any knocking will be a problem. CheckCv boots as well if there's any knocking sounds or banging. Does the steering grind at all? Does the car track properly or pull when accelerating or braking? Check the discs and pads. check the springs underneath for bubble rust as springs of this age will be worn.. dampers for leaks... all the usual stuff really. There's bound to be a few bits and bobs, any air con pipes rot like **** on these and all Pugs...

However, for £350 quid, this lasts a year + he's got his money's worth... what you dont want is a big bill in 6 months come MOT time hence why I said check last advisories.

Great advice, I'll give him a note of it to take with him.

I've just got the number plate to check insurance quotes.

It's not showing up and can't be traced. What does this mean? It's definitely the right number.

Insurance comparison sites don't recognise the car.

Wouldn't worry about it tbh, just make sure the owner really owns it and has the v5 etc.

These are terrible cars, worst driving position I've ever experienced and **** poor reliability. But for 350 why not

For 350 sheets you can't go too far wrong I suppose. The registration not being recognised by insurance sites would be an instant red flag for me though!

I agree! Not showing up on DVLA vehicle enquiry either.

On VREG, it shows the car was registered in Glasgow. That's all it says and all I can find.

Because its only looking at the first two characters of the plate.

Good to know, cheers!

Your bound to know Fox! Why isn't the car appearing on any databases? This guys in his 50's and his wife's been driving it for 2 years. It's definitely not stolen.

Asking to see the V5 and checking its MOT history might be a good idea.

What about the VIN number? Anyway to identify the car from that to prove its legit?

Well he bought it and insured it. Took it to his mechanic friend who said it needs a track rod end. £9 for the part.

It's knocking a bit and apparently this is the cause.

The clock display doesn't work, as in its off.

Overall for 350 quid. Not a bad runaround. Will post pics but I doubt anyone wants to see an old pug.

Go for it, might only be a knackered 350 quid pug but it may well still be a better car than many 10 x the price. Plus its basically disposable

Case in point I looked at a 55 aygo at auction yesterday for the Mrs - Bodywork was a bit rough, the head was going and it was practically devoid of oil. It sold for 2200 no doubt to a private bidder who just seen it rolling down at a distance and thought it was exactly what they wanted- add the fees on and thats close to what a decent one would be privately.
