Hi guys, quick question.

Have a 6950 unlocked to 6970 and would like to get a 6990 to go xfire with. However before purchasing one i realised i may ot be able to due to my psu! So I am praying... will my corsair 750hx be able to power it? along with i7 2600k 2x4gb ram , 1tb samsung hdd and 60 gb ocz sdd.

Cheers

oof... quality power supplies like yours do punch above their weight but there's only so much they can do. apparently at full load your cards can do 860 watts overclocked, and we might assume even more if you're lucky with overclocking. even if you don't overclock that leaves barely anything for your 2600k, which is a fully fledged quad-core with hyperthreading

edit: lol i always get beaten to the post...

You can assume his 2600k is already overclocked, as the link i posted they're using a 920 what draws more power anyway. 190w load without any cards.

I'd say you'll be alright, 860w @85% efficiency is 730w anyway.

i thought efficiency refers to how much power needs to be drawn from the wall in order to provide a certain wattage? as in 860w needs to be drawn from the wall to provide 730w to the psu. you're probably right though and the psu probably can scrape it but the system isn't gonna last forever and i don't know how safe i would personally feel about it...

mmmmm! wow that's a lot better than my random conjecture. so in a best case scenario the numbers do add up. psus do get worse over time though... i would just keep that in mind.

Yeah that's true, but as a stop gap you know your PSU isn't going to cut out due to OCP. I personally would get something with a little more overhead for peace of mind and possibly the noise the fan will generate from being 100% load :D

Noise is one of the reasons i run a 1200i, fanless up to something like 45% load? Lovely! :D :D

wow, i'm rather jealous. i have an antec hcg 750w, but having built my first system i now know the value of quiet power supplies. it's the loudest thing in my case at idle, and it's really damn annoying... i'm halfway to spending £800 on used a/v stuff for my pc and it's like, what is the point of buying all these accurate speakers/sound cards/etc. if i have a constantly humming power supply >.<. i've ordered a fractal define r4 to try and help... but fanless up to 45% would be bloody amazing. especially as i would probably rarely ever reach 540 watts!

wow, so I may just risk it. In regards to the setup, how it perform in regards to crysis 3 and what equivalent 7xxx series setup is it? better then a single 7970 I would hope?

cosair psu are good 750w would actual be 800w but they label it 750w so that you get no ripping so 850w would be 900w something long them line so I would suggest upgrading your psu to either a hx850 or hx1050. the 1050 might give you better future proofing. but then again I when mad and bought a ax1200 psu so that it would let me oc my cpu with out worry and have future proofing for either sli or CF when I do my next mobo, cpu, ram upgrade. but I had to upgrade my graphic card this week before my cpu, mobo, ram upgrade and because I got a 7950 I can't crossfire on my current mobo as it only support sli.

I used to power mine just fine for a few years with a Enemax1000 and this power is what id recommend and wouldn't like to go below really.

Im using Corsair 1200 now which I picked because its silent ive never heard the fan spin up yet.

The 6990 is a very loud card and after just a few days with mine id ordered a water block for it I just couldn't live with the noise with the stock cooler.

I think you would be better off with a single 7970 or 680 tbh or wait for next gen cards.

thing is, a 6990 + 6970 is better then a single card.. and I can grab one for much cheaper than either of those (only want to spend minimal), which will last me till I can save for next gen complete upgrade when I graduate and have an actual job! (poor student)

It's the HX 850 that punches well above 1000 watts unfortunately and not the HX 750.Surely you'll be better off getting another 6950/6970 ? the HX 750 should cope with 2x 6950/6970.
