A friend of mine woke up to find their Nexus 4 in their dog's water bowl. Not good :p.

They put it in rice for a few days and it charges/powers on. Everything appears to work: sound, network connectivity (can hear notifications coming through) and even the touch screen responds. The screen however just displays pure white. The back-light appears to work as it will go brighter/dimmer just no picture comes through off the phone.

Is there going to be any point in stripping it down and fully cleaning it up or a waste of my time? Presumably it will likely be a graphics/motherboard issue rather than screen unit?

Cheers!

I don't think it will work again. If the water was clean and it's totally dried out there will be nothing to clean inside.

It's worth a shot, but I wouldn't get my hopes up.

white screen normally means that the display it self went poof.. i had that with my old k750i.. :) and my n81... :)

Damn. My old k750i developed a crack on the right and I ended up with less and less visible screen over the course of a few months as it spread until I had about 10% usable and I had to admit defeat :D.

Looks like Carphone Warehouse do Nexus 4 repairs so we'll have to see how much they charge. I also read on XDA developers that LG charge between £40-£120 for repairs, even at £120 that's probably far cheaper than going down the insurance route I imagine.

Joy :/.

On the plus note, the battery has held out for days whilst in this state :D.

N81, now there was a classic.

White screen = dead display driver unless it's a BB (in which case it can anything). It might be fixable with a replacement screen but it's not 100% guaranteed to fix it. Ditch the battery, it's compromised. Also if you change your mind and DIY fix it, rub all the exposed circuits down with isopropyl alcohol to stop the corroding from going any further.

TURBO EDIT: There's a water sticker under one of the chips in some phones, make sure your phone isn't one of these.

believe it or not its still working! :o i went for a swim twice with it, and had it drop in the bath 4 times! its still alive, the display was dead for a while but then came back on fine.. one of the speakers went poof the rest is working :) tough phone lol.

They should just claim on their insurance policy, that's what it is there for after all :p

I figured the increase in premiums and excess charge would probably make it more expensive than paying ~£150 for a repair or whatever it is.

Insurance is a complete scam for low valued stuff :p.

Give it longer to dry out...when I dropped my HTC magic in water, it worked fine after a few days but the backlight was sporadic....a few days later and it was perfect.
