I'd completely forgotten about HL3. Suspect I'm not the only one. Personally couldn't care less if they make it or not, now. There have been other great story shooters recently, and HL2 isn't such a benchmark as it was previously.
I think you will find that it will be on a new engine if it ever comes out and HL2 at the time was fantastic source engine is showing its age now ofc but in 2004 it was fantastic
Trouble is the reaction is going to be like Daikatana or DNF, almost inevitably there are going to be disappointed people unless HL3 is something extraordinary.
That's the challenge Valve face now, because we've been waiting so long. More of the same isn't going to cut it. It's been 9 (nine!) years now since HL2...
Tbh I think that the hype for Half Life 3 has reached it's peak and both the hype and interest is slowly declining now, Valve took a gamble and unless HL3 is here before the flurry of next-gen titles it's not going to do half as well as it could have done.

Hmm I guess there's a tiny possibility that HL3 could be a PS4/NextBox title... maybe even a launch title. They'd have to have some Asian-tier secrecy skills tho

Unless it's the best game ever. Again. If it is released, since it's taking this long they must be doing something a little bit special. Valve's games don't need to rely only on hype.
I don't know if it will have the same impact as it did when the last 2 games were released.
A lot of the people that played the 2 games may have moved on and the competition has also increased so they would have to pull out all the stops for it to be the best game ever.
I still think it would do well just because of the name alone, but I do think the boat has sailed for it to become one of the best selling titles of all time.
