Hey guys :)

For my birthday my dad has said he will go halves on a set of studio monitors with me. I'm currently looking at the Rokit 5s, and was just wondering if there are any better monitors in the same price range?

Thanks :)

Apparently the KRKs are much less affected by room acoustics though, and I move around a lot as a student. May actually be better off with them.

For that price just stick with the KRKs. Although I really would strongly recommend putting some more money towards a pair of monitors. I guess it depends on what you are studying and how much of a passion it is.

I would suggest buying them from Digital Village as the 4 year warranty just makes sense. As well as go and listen to them if you have one near you. My nearest one is Bristol and I will be making the trip there soon with a max budget of £800 for a pair of monitors so I will give them a heads up and let them know what ones I want to demo.

There is no way I'd be able to afford a more expensive pair, as I still have to buy the rest of the setup - CDJs, Mixer, Keyboard and controllers and stuff. These things hold their value so I'll be able to sell in a couple of years for a better pair.

Music is my life, but unfortunately I don't have the money to get everything I need.

Oh if you're not producing and just bedroom DJing/controllerism then they will be fine. As for hold their value, well they are budget monitors as it is. Second hand looks like they are going 170 - 180. So not too big of a loss as long as they don't bring out a v3.

Have you thought about going second hand? Good thing with speakers is that unless someone has really blasted them with some crap you could pick up a pretty good pair for your budget. Second hand is the way to go for audio gear as whatever you get will be abused by yourself anyway. My 1210s were second hand and other gear I bought in the US and brought back with me and saved a good amount that way.

Unfortunately I left upgrading my monitors as the last thing which was a stupid move on my part. Pair of 1210s, S4, X1, APC40, Maschine & Komplete, KP3, Axiom 61, Macbook Pro, and probably some other stuff that I forget. I know as soon as I upgrade I'm going to be going back to all this and loving every minute of it. I also have got some work experience coming up with Allen & Heath at the end of the month and I know if I try any gear I will find it hard not to buy it. A ZED desk would be so very very nice haha.

One thing I would suggest is don't spend too much cash on controllers or midi keyboards. Buy what you need and not something which has features you will probably never use. For instance the drums pads on my Axiom. If I bought a decent semi weighted keyboard with no pads, no faders, and just a few pots I would have saved a nice amount.

So the Yamahas over the Krks then?

They don't seem to have RCA jacks though, guess I could get an RCA/mp3 > 1/4 inch cables though right?

Yep a pair of RCA to mono jack cables will do you nicely.

I got some HS-80Ms recently and I'm very pleased with them for the money. They're definitely on the low-end of monitors but I can't imagine much of an improvement without spending at least twice the cash.

Sweet :)

It's a shame I won't be able to get them before I start work on this new track however, I have a vocalist ready for it now, so I guess I'll have to make do with my Microlab SOLO1Cs for now :)

I'll be getting a pair of CDJ 900s over the summer as well as a decent main keyboard, my Korg Microkey is good for now though :)

Yamaha HS80M's are quality if you can afford. Had a set of M-Audio BX5As which did the trick then upgraded the the HS80M's after much umming and ahhing over the KRK's and a couple other brands.

Few of my friends have the KRKs and they are good speakers, don't get me wrong, but i'd take the HS80M's (or 50's if 80 is too big).

Pretty much set on the HS50Ms now, seem to be by fair the best thing I can get in my price range. I prefer the look to the KRKs as well, but that's pretty much irrelevant :D
