I bought a system from a competitor about 18 months ago and to cut a long story short I wound up OC'ing the system myself its based on the maximus iv gene. So now I got the bug and want to build my first one for my son using the maximus v gene because im used to the board and like it. I was going to go with the i7-3770k but thought I'd stick with the i5 and put the money saved toward the gtx 680 instead of the 670..Only thing that's a little unnerving is the fact that there will be no warranty as I would get with a prebuilt system. Anyway what do you guys think ? PS. I'll probably change the ssd to the samsung pro YOUR BASKET

PSU is a trusted & well known brand who make strong PSU's
SSD is better than the Kingston, it's Intel's OEM
G/Card, 680 is overpriced for what you get, if you really want nVidia get the 670, otherwise the 7950 will be more than enough, best value for money.

Thanks, yea I'll want to stick with nVidia and was leaning towards the samsung pro , is there any point in going with the i7 for gaming or is the i5 good enough... ?

i5 is the chip for gaming mate.

Any reason you're sticking with nVidia?

If you do, go for the 670 not the 680. There is pretty much no difference.

Those old drivers put me right off ATI , with the current nVidia you don't even have to restart your pc and I like how they even released a new one for bioshock infinite. I just remember going back a few years it was a whole ordeal updating their drivers unless they changed it now...yea the i7 does well on AnandTech Bench..

If you really really really have to have Nvidia. Look at THIS 670. It uses the 680 PCB and the 680 cooler. The 670 is a cutdown 680 anyway but they removed very little. Overclocking will essentially net you the same performance for less cash :D

P.S I'm up for adoption......just putting that out there ;)

Thanks for the different ideas , I was looking at the hyperx memory but couldn't find it on asus's qualified vendor list although I know it's ok I'm being overly cautious

Whoa Hono your up for adoption? O_O

Nice build though :) Worth noting the Gigabyte board is voltage locked.

If I'd get a rig like that......damn right I am ;)

Yes the Z77N is voltage locked but I don't see why the CPU would get to atleast 4.4Ghz as we have enough cash for decent cooling. I wouldn't spend £160 on a m-atx or mini-itx mobo, there is THIS mobo with the voltage control but it's a lot of extra cash for the option. Ok it might overclock a little higher but it's not cost effective in my eyes, might as well put the cash towards the i7 and keep the Z77N IMHO

Gonna stick with the gene If I do build it myself , I love that board...

That's fair enough fella. I'm not a fan of m-ATX mobos, more on that later.

I have nothing against Asus, I have an Asus mobo in my HTPC. Although the Gene does offer lots of great features like Xfire/SLi support, it is a m-ATX mobo which isn't ideal for dual GPUs as they sit sooo close to each other......a full sized ATX mobo is really a better option.

Have you considered handing your rig down to your boy and building yourself something new instead?

AMD have really stepped up there game with drivers in recent months, things are looking really positive. i7 and a 7970/50 is the best way to go nivida cards are way overpriced and are out performed by amd equivalent + 7970/50 overclock like beasts!

I might as well go for the i7 , I'll go and check out ATI's drivers and some comparison sites comparing the 7970 and nVidia equivalents ...I just remember they had like 3 different downloads for each driver called catalysts and they never installed right for me..........I think I had the x1800 which had a built in tuner & capture card so that made it more complicated..

Funny how these things do stick in your mind. I had no end of grief with the AMD integrated graphics on my AM3 mobo because of drivers crashing. It resulted in me dropping in a 1GB 460 from Nvidia to resolve it and make the HTPC a console killer.

You are doing the right thing talking it all through. I'm disappointed at how little interest has been taken in this thread as you have plenty of cash to play with.........at 100 posts you get free P&P by the way. Handy if you want to add little upgrades as and when and grab stuff on offer :D
