Finally an airline who sees the fairness in charging for person and luggage per kilo.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-22001256

Ive been saying for years this was teh only fair way

I could be charged a fortune for taking 5 extra kgs of luggage, yet the guy weighing 10 stone next to me (also making my journey less comfortable) pays in effect less for the journey yet weighs loads more.

Why not charge more for younger people as well? They use more oxygen than older people therefore the O2 system needs to work harder. How about tall people, since they need more leg room. If everyone was shorter they could get in more seats.

Will you have to weigh in now with your luggage? Can see a lot of women objecting to that! ;)

Does make sense I guess but can't see it being popular.

Because fuel is a direct cost, the oxygen systems don't work that much harder... But weight does make a difference.
It won't catch on, as it works well in Soma as everyone is a biffer, looking round most standardly booked long haul flights to far east and south east Asia, the flights are not filled with biffers. Different on your holiday trips to the south of Spain, but as they are generally package booked the airline will have little control over what Jabba turns up.

yes i think it will be much more for scheduled flighs where they make up the planes capacity with freight. Will be able to calculate a much more accurate take off weight and hence carry less excess fuel as well

That post is all kinds of stupid, so I hope it was at least a little ironic... right?

So on average tall people will also pay more than short people, women will pay less than men and child prices will vary more.

Will also be interesting to see how the logistics of this will work. How do you buy tickets in advance? Do they have the equipment to safely weigh people?

I agree with this, to a point.

There should be 1 flat fee up to a certain weight, then extra charge for anything above. There should be no difference up until, say 15 or 16 Stone, then anything above that is charged extra, it would be unfair to do it just on the weight, as men will nearly always have a higher fare than women.

But the cost to transport someone is directly related to their weight, not their weight over an arbitrary amount.

Exactly, so my guess would be when booking a ticket you put in weight, and pay the amoutn per kg (varies by route).
When you arrive at airport they quickly check you and luggage on scales and assuming your under then you having nothing to pay. If your over you pay a surcharge.

Could be funny to see people turning up at the airport in nothing but speedos to keep the cost down. Would bring a new side to budget travel lol

But working out fuelling prices is done on an average per adult, if said adult is above the average weight they should pay more, less than average or average they would pay the normal fee.

Surely the flight home would be more expensive though???
Healthy living goes out the window when I'm on holiday!! All that food and alcohol??
Guaranteed a few extra pounds :D

Let them go for it.

Only people who weigh less will travel with them and everyone else will go elsewhere. All it will do is eat into their own bottom line!

Why no discount for below average? Why should they not pay less if they personally weigh less?

So you don't think that if that was the case, other airlines might have an issue with catering for all the overweight people. Its bearable because there is a mix. If you had a whole plane of fatties then it wouldn't work so well. That airline would suddenly have to raise their prices.

Works both ways.
