Just had a letter through the post today from NPower saying that I owed them £508 from nov last year till feb this year.

And that they were changing my monthly direct debit from £52 a month to £140.

I received the letter today and just looked at my bank account and £140 has been taken out yesterday.

There "estimated" readings were

electricity - 04/08/12 - actual 1359 21/02/2013 estimate 2983 this is about right tbh. readying today was 3700

Gas - 23/09/12 actual 288 and 21/02/2013 estimate 1045. where my actual reading today 5 weeks later is only 645.

an extra charge of £311 which i still haven't even used yet.

I have done price comparisons for the total years worth of energy as Its a new house and we were the first in and the 15th march we were here a year. everywhere else is saying around £550 a year which is about £50 a month no where near £140.

Avoid Npower
Avoid comparison sites they are rigged, especially for utilities.
Spend half a day making a spreadsheet.
Get an app for your computer/phone/tablet and try and take readings every week with temp average, this is invaluable data when you are trying to work out who's cheaper.
Use online account so you don't get estimates with self read.

I lost two years of data :( I forgot to back up that one file. Everything else backs up auto ati ally, seems that file somehow slipped past.

They did exactly the same to me and my girlfriend. Good luck getting through to their customer services...

I rang them today and had to wait 3 hours to get through and they said its a mistake and we will re-work it out and send you a new bill but your payments will stay the same.

Still took £140 out of my account and showing on there site that I will owe £140 a month.

I live in a brand new house everything is A rated heating kicks in for about 5 minutes every couple of hours thats it.

comparison sites said It should cost me £47 a month elec and £4 gas not £444 for 6 months

well if you take my actual readings I took today thats a full year and 2 weeks extra so thats what I worked it out on.

Depending on tarrif/company. Your two prices, are no split down the middle for each month. Some companies will make you use expensive units in winter, drastically increasing what you pay and fooling comparison sites as they don't take it into account.

So where is says 687kw at Xp then yp after that.
Some go 3/4 of that allowance in winter. When you'll actually use fuel.

this is what my npower usage for gas current says

Meter type Register type Last reading date Submitted by Reading Usage
Credit Meter 24 hours 23/09/2012 Customer 288 0
Credit Meter 24 hours 21/02/2013 Estimate 1045 488
Credit Meter 24 hours 21/02/2013 Estimate 557 269
Credit Meter 24 hours 03/04/2013 Customer 649 99604

appartanly now I have used the entire cycle of the gas meter in 5 weeks.

thats not bad only about £82,000 for 5 weeks gas.

This is quite interesting. I haven't got my bill to hand but they wanted to charge me £110 when we use about £55 a month. I've got it down to £65 on a new tariff which I'm happy with. It was a 90 minute phone call which they also blamed a technical error for their estimations!

Terrible company. Once kept charging me for a meter they removed.

Just tell them you want to provide a meter reading every month and they can bill you to that, none of this £90pm carp so they get a nice interest free loan.

Exactly this would be perfect. Not staying with blower though they buggered up my account so many times now.

I hate all utilities companies. (npower, british gas and southern electric) all have shocking customer service and british gas even kicked our door in because we owed £200 - the door, call out and locksmith ended up costing them £400! retards

So glad I live in decent services apartments, only paying council tax, water and electric directly to the landlord

I've been with Npower a while now, and they seem no better or worse than any other utility company.

It did make me laugh when I got my 6 monthly bill last Nov and being £5.67 in credit they wanted to put my monthly D/D up from £40 to £57 :p

I just rang them and said no, keep it at £40, no issues.

My fixed rate tariff is coming to an end on 21st May so I am starting to look around, so am interested in Glaucus's accusation that comparison sites are rigged...any evidence for that?

TBH, being numerate, I was fine when the tariff system was a minefield, :p as I know my usage and could manually calculate my costs from the enormous amount of tariffs available.

From a cursory glance today it seems isupplyenergy will be the least expensive rise (no savings for me!) and the fact they are a British Company (so they claim) make them more appealing since about every other supplier is foreign owned?

They tried to send my works a standing charge bill for a meter that was removed in 2008 :P

A mate of mine used to work in NPower's customer support, his job was "convincing the caller that it was their fault not NPowers".

Wish I knew this a couple of days ago!

Just switched to save ourselves about £125 a year. We now supposedly pay £86 for gas and electricity.

Previously on £36 gas, £66 electricity.

I didn't know they could stiff you like that. We did take it up through moneysavingexpert.com, and their new cheap comparison/energy saving tool, and made sure we chose one with no penalty for leaving, but I'll check that out.

We've changed to First Utility. Anybody else with them?

Cant stand them, had a proverbial billing nightmare with them back in 2008, moved to a different supplier as a result.

Hopefully they've screwed everyone's up because apparently we've used ~£400 of electric in the past quarter despite no one being in the house during the day. Our heating is gas and we have a gas cooker. We're pretty sure we're doing nothing different to last quarter when it was considerably less.

WTF could use that much? :/

This thread made me check my account and turns out since my last bill (March), I am £360 in credit with them, and since last week meter reading from the gas man, I've apparently used 9959 units! nearly a whole cycle compared to their last estimate (Feb)!

Good god!
