Best route to Haverford West from the North

Hi all

I will be going to Haverfordwest (south west wales) again driving, from Scotland

Google suggests 3 routes:
1. M6, 416 mi, 7 hours 47 mins
2. M6 & A487, 402 mi, 7 hours 55 mins
3. M6 & M4 500 mi, 7 hours 55 mins

I took the second route, down the coast, lovely route it was and it only took 7h including stops

I'll be going down again next week, should I take the first route instead or am I better off with the same route again? the M6/M4 seems a bit longer and a bit pointless so I've discounted it.

Or does anyone have any better routes I could take, better being more interesting/nicer roads/ etc.

If 7 hours isn't enough for you then you can always take a detour into the Lakes. Come off the M6 at Carlisle or Penrith and rejoin at Kendal. I've done that once or twice just for a bit of fun.

Haven't done the bit through Wales for years so can't really offer much advice there. Definitely don't take the 3rd option, boring as all hell.

Could do, but will be travelling at night, getting to wales as sun is rising... Would rather blast down to wales and then take it easy -- was really more curious as to the best route through the wales. The coastal route was very scenic and through the valleys as very beautiful, just curious if there are some other roads I should take.

I could list a dozen nice routes in scotland to get from east to west, I understood wales to be similar if not as extensive.
 
I live in Haverfordwest (its one word :) ) and a few years ago drove a car back from Glasgow. I went M6, M5, M50, A449, M4. I haven't actually done the coast road before. I stopped overnight at the Premier Inn at the end of the M50.

Sometimes when coming back from the outlaws I will pull off the A449 at the Abergavenny turning for the A40 and take that road all the way home. Its a good drive away from the boring M and dual A roads. It also used to have Keith Price Subaru so always worth a stop - back in the early 00s anyway :)

Hmm. Going so far south only to almost go back just seems wrong, also, the M6 sucks around Birmingham etc.
Does anyone have any comments on the first route suggested by google? I may just google streetview it tonight for an hour or so lol.

Also thanks for the correction on the place name, I can't change the topic title, though.
 
If you're just looking to get there in the shortest time and driving so late/early, I'd personally go M6 > M5 > M4, purely because you'll have an extremely quiet, straight ribbon of tarmac to go warp speed on. But then I'm not a fan of winding roads in the dark.

Unless of course the extra fuel for those added 80 miles is a consideration, in which case may as well go M6 > A487.

This but I would still go M50 A449 and pick up the M4. Its a bit quicker.
 
Maybe it's just my starting location but I've gone
A40
A483 to Builth Wells and up.

The coast roads are a bit pants, either depressing industrial sections or 30mph villages.

Fill up with petrol before you get there because they don't sell the Iron Horse water in Wales.
