I haven't posted on here since I first joined.

Problem, a grumpy teenager who is trying to use a cheapo PC from one of the high street stores for gaming. This PC was purchased for general internet and homework use.

He spends most of his waking hours playing League Of Legends, interspersed with the odd swearing fit when the PC decides it has had enough and completely shuts down.

I was just wondering if something like this might keep him quiet for longer than five minutes and calm his poor old Dads nerves.

Do you have any experience with building computers?

If not, would you be open to the idea of learning?

Or are you really only looking for pre-built machines? :p

If you are open to the idea of building a PC, then it would be very similar to the one posted above, but it would cost slightly less. However taking into consideration the fact that buying the pre built system above will save the hassle of building it/learning to build a PC, it will have been built by professionals, it will be all set and ready to rock and roll straight out of the box, and it comes with a two year collect and return warranty, I would just go with the pre-build personally :)

Games like league of legends will run with absolutely no issues whatsoever, at maximum settings, in full HD with a fantastic frame rate :)

It will also run any mainstream 3D game out there such as Battlefield 3, Modern Warfare 3 and the like, if he turns the settings down a bit :D

This one on the other hand, will play any game out there bar the extremely demanding titles such as Crysis, Metro 2033, Far Cry 3 and Crysis 3 on high/ultra settings full HD.

It would actually cost this much though, as mickyflinn hasn't included an OS.

Whereas the one I posted, comes with Windows 8 pre-installed, making this system £170 more.

It is indeed a far superior machine, however it is considerably more expensive, and I would consider it overkill to the extreme for games such as League of Legends. There will be absolutely no noticeable performance increase when playing that sort of game :p I also think that at a full £170 more than the AMD A10 Lightning, that is is over-priced.

The only noticeable performance difference between the two machines will be graphical - i.e solely down to the graphics card. The CPU performance is very similar for almost every usage scenario, and they have the same ammount of RAM and storage space, as well as the same power supply etcetera.

The graphics card in the Vortex i3 is the Radeon HD7850 2GB, which costs less than £170 alone. Take that away, and you have a machine which is incapable of playing videogames with acceptable performance.

I think the Graphics card would be the only thing of any use from the PC as it stands at the moment.

The PC is an Acer Aspire M3201.

Windows Vista 32 bit.

AMD Phenom 9150e @ 1.80 GHz.

200 GB Ram.

nVidia GEForce GT 520

We replaced the PSU last year, but I cannot remember the wattage.

Why does his sons age matter?

Again with the recommending an OTT system and not including an OS.

DVD-ROM drive should really be a DVD-RW drive for the sake of a few quid. Also why get a full ATX case for a M-ATX build?:rolleyes:

When you add the OS it comes to £555. The GPU you have included costs £155, and when you take it away you end up with a system which cost £400 and cannot run games well at all. Considering the fact that the AMD Trinity option costs £420, and the APU has a very capable HD7660 built in, which is more than enough for playing any mainstream game comfortably at 1440x900 resolution, and considering the fact that the CPU performance is very nearly identical, and the other core components like the amount of RAM and the RAM speed as well as the PSU are the same, it seems to me like a bad choice.

It is also worth noting that if more GPU grunt is needed in the future if and when his son becomes more of a gaming enthusiast and wants to get into playing some more demanding titles, a GPU can be added (lets say for arguments sake that it costs £155), which would bring the total build cost - even then, to only £20 more than what you are proposing.

I think a complete new build would be more advisable.

My latest flightsim rig was gutted from a shop bought PC and upgraded a little bit, so I don't mind getting my hands dirty so to speak.

Yes I am aware of that. I have amended my post. :)

I still wouldn't touch a Foxconn made motherboard with a barge pole though. I mean look at it for one. And I have had bad experiences with them. I trust them to make the components that go on a motherboard, but not to piece them all together into a working, final product.

It certainly doesn't look great, but still Foxconn are the OEM for a significant amount of working final products.

Everyone will have had bad experiences with some manufacturer. I've had an Asus motherboard catch fire, for example, doing nothing other than running at stock speeds.

Considering the fact that the AMD Trinity option costs £420, and the APU has a very capable HD7660 built in, which is more than enough for playing any mainstream game comfortably at 1440x900 resolution, and considering the fact that the CPU performance is vastly superior, the case in your proposed spec has bad reviews and the PSU is not of equal quality to the CX430 (though I do myself own one - it seems solid enough, but it does emit a very annoying coil whine) it seems to me like a bad choice.

It is also worth noting that if more GPU grunt is needed in the future if and when his son becomes more of a gaming enthusiast and wants to get into playing some more demanding titles, a GPU can be added.

The A10 machine is very well rounded setup. I would be surprised if the G840 does not bottleneck the 7850. The machine will also be slower for regular web browsing and desktop publishing, as well as encoding and any other CPU intensive use...

my little brother would so the same on his xbox, got to the point where he would swear at his mates on there so we took his xbox off him for a month
