*** Official Nintendo Wii U thread ***

What's the point in having 3 identical consoles? What a daft desire!

So having a console that is purposely underpowered with a 'gimmick' is better than having 3 identical consoles with different exclusives?

Now Nintendo 3rd party support is horrendous currently, imagine how much worse it's going to get once they stop releasing games on the PS360, games designed for 8GB of RAM just aren't going to reduce to the 1GB of RAM the Wii U has very easily.

How about Nintendo stop bringing out under-powered gimmicky consoles and just concentrate on their superb games and release them on other platforms.

Half of what makes their games so good are the "gimmicks" that people complain about.

If zelda was the same as it was 20 years ago people would be moanning they never innovate, but they manage to keep their franchises fresh by innovating in hardware and developing software to take advantge of it.

Innovations in hardware are what will lead the way to better software, moreso then just increasing raw graphical grunt.

Yeah they should get rid of their massive profit making console business, totally agree.

Oh wait was this an april fools gag?

Nintendo should make a lower powered console than nextbox/ps4 but offer it at an extremely affordable price e.g <£150

The touchpad is keeping costs up, a console with the same specs as wii u but normal controls could be offered at this pricepoint, which would drastically help sales. Only want the wii u for HD nintendo games.

Was Skyward Sword really made better by having motion controls? I don't personally think so as much as I liked the game.

Neither the 3DS or Wii U are making Nintendo massive profits right now..

I guess that's quite subjective, as some liked it and some didn't. But my point relates to all of the different puzzles within the game that used the motion controls. If the gameplay was the same as always then it wouldn't have gotten the praise it did when it came out.

I personally loved it, and enjoyed the boss battles much more because of it, but i can appreciate why some people wouldnt have.

The wii u isn't, but the 3ds is on fire at the moment despite a slow start. I think i read somewhere that its outpacing the original DS? may not be true though

The 3DS is doing great in Japan, it's their highest selling console, it's not doing amazingly outside of Japan though, mainly because we're still waiting on games to be localised, e.g Animal Crossing.

Though sales doesn't always mean profit, I know they have made losses the past 2 years.

Article at IGN now updated with a quote from an Engadget Article with Mark Rein after his comments:

Update: Speaking with Engadget, Epic's Mark Rein doubled back on his previous comments to IGN concerning Wii U and Unreal Engine 4. "If someone wants to take Unreal Engine 4 and ship a game on Wii U, they can," Rein said. "If they wanna ship an Unreal Engine 4 game on Xbox 360, they could make it happen." The scalable nature of Unreal Engine means we'll see it running in browsers and mobile in the future -- and maybe current-gen consoles as well. Why Rein denied it so aggressively in the first place isn't certain.

Original story follows.

Essentially the thing can run on browsers so of course it's extremely scalable technology so UE4 can run on Wii U, 360 and PS3. Of course it's going to be all about dialing down on certain details but hey, that's like how you do it on PC.

Poor sales does not equal a bad console, same with games.

What makes something good, it's popularity? If so then there would never be any niche music genres and we'd all be bopping to.... i don't even know whats in the charts right now.

And as far as Nintendo selling games on other consoles comparing the price of PC games to console games it looks to me like the license fee is about £10 per game: if Nintendo keep making consoles that do not incur a loss then they can eat that £10 per game themselves, or choose to discount more heavily (which they don't seem to do). If anything, Nintendo should sell gaming peripherals for PC and release exclusively there. A Nintendo and Steam team up on the cards, sidestep DX licensing and go straight for Linux?

No, but it does equal weakened developer support...which in turn equals a poor console.

The fact it's still being talked about after all these months of release suggests something's not right.

I agree with the comment about 3rd party support dwindling, that's true. But it depends on each individual person surely what matters? I had a 'cube and it was awesome: the games were excellent, and I never felt wanting for more. Yet it's not considered a commercial success on forums.

I think it's fair to segregate gamers into how much time they game for: between my PC and my Wii U (3DS fpr public transport) I never 'run out' of games. If I played for as long a week as some of my Steam friends do, especially exclusively on a Nintendo machine then maybe I see your point. I've had a Wii U since launch and not finished with any of my games yet! (Sonic Racing, NSMBU, T!T!T!, and NintendoLand).

It's early days, you were all saying the same at the PS3 launch.....

Indeed...as soon as the Nintendo, recognised (not Pikmin)1st party games come at the end of the year (a Mario 3D Platformer and Mario Kart have a high possibility of making 2013 I would assume) then the system will certainly shift a good few units!

I'm really looking forward to see what e3 brings this year!

3D Mario sells worse than 2D Mario and well New Super Mario Bros U is hardly shifting units is it?
