This thread is for detailing the best/interesting/different pubs/bars in your town. Just give the name, and a sentence or two about what makes it so good. Hopefully we can all discover some new pubs as well as providing a resource to folk if they are visiting your town.

Glasgow

  • Pot Still - Best whisky pub in Glasgow. 150+ whiskies on offer and some great knowledge behind the bar. Couple of beer pumps which are rotated often and a reasonably well packed beer fridge. Just a great pub!
  • Bon Accord - This is an ale pub. Around 8 pumps, which change regularly. Circa 100 whiskies as well and it's the meeting place of the Glasgow Whisky Club so the knowledge behind the bar (and infront of it) is top notch. Cracking food as well.
  • Blackfriars - My favourite pub. Around 4 pumps which are changed regularly. Easily the best selection of American ales in the city and a decent selection of Belgian stuff. Very friendly staff, and a great mix of clientel. No TV either!
  • Munros - This place is new, and I've only been once. It does have potential though. 8 pumps/taps and on my visit I knew little of them.

Great idea.

  • The George Tavern, Stepney. My local at the bottom of the road. Ok beer on tap, a couple of decent ales but really good homemade bar snacks. Has quite a few nights on - gigs, shows, quizzes, etc. It's a lovely old building which has been a pub, in some design, for the last 700 years. Was written about by Chaucer, Pepys and Dickens when it was known as the Halfway House.
  • The Carpenter's Arms, Bethnal Green/Shoreditch. Very strong selection of beers, including Meantime London Pale Ale and Brooklyn on tap. They tend not to do loads of traditional pub food but serve food boards, which I think suit an afternoon of drinking better.
  • Greenwich Union. Been meaning to go for quite a while, but went for the first time last night. Excellent food and, the pub believes, the largest selection of beer available in London. Really good service last night, ordered two pints of London Pale Ale and the guy also bought over tasters of their Porter and Red Ale. As far as Brewers go, Meantime have got to be up there and it's excellent to see that this pub is run in the same vein.
  • The Prince Albert, Twickenham. Been going to this place for years. Close to a mates house and also our first choice of pub for a post-football drink. Best pint of London Pride you could find in anywhere. They also have a top notch Thai restaurant attached to the pub.

Very good idea as York is a popular place here goes

  • Plonkers http://www.plonkers-york.com/ Great pub as long as York isn't flooded! Good independent pub which serves decent pub grub and decent lager
  • bobo lobos http://www.bobolobo.net/ Good place for something different and unquie food is good as well but very spicey be warned
  • Biltmore http://thebiltmorebarandgrill.com/ Posh Champagne bar serves good lager and a wide choice of spirts and serves the bubbly by the glass
  • Oscars not to be confused by the very poor stone grill ( which is operating out of Oscars old building) this place sevres the best burger in YOrk by a mile but also turns out to be a very a good bar on a night
  • Vahe Bar http://withinthewalls.tumblr.com/koko is a bar which serves all sorts of continental beer and ciders. He even offers warm cider for the winter months!

I deliberately left out the more well known chainy type pubs of York. I'll add to this list after I have thought about it more.

York has some awesome pubs just stay away the usual hell holes :D

What a great idea. Here is my selection, will try get some of my own pics to go with the reviews (so far only have borrowed from the internet) and will add more as I think fit.

North Yorkshire

Northallerton / Bedale Area

Northalleton

The only 2 pubs I think worth a mention here is the Tickle Toby Inn & The Standard:

Edit: I tell I lie here as I forgot to mention a third...The Tithe Bar!

The Tickle Toby

Tickle_zps52b5aa85.jpg

Located in the centre of Northallerton this pub has a fantastic atmosphere and is a very popular spot on a Friday & Saturday night. The pub offers a happy hour between 5pm - 7pm which is a nice touch.

The above picture is quite old and the interior has since been done out, however the bar is still in the same spot.

This pub is very long and not so wide, however there is plenty of seating available along with 'booths' at the rear of the pub, and offers plenty of standing area.

Food is served everyday evening and lunch time and for the prices very good, however I do think The Standard still offer the very best pub food you will ever have.

The pub offers very good choice of real ale, ciders & lagers. The wine options are typically on tap which I am never a fan of.

The Standard

TheStandard_zpsf7ce86a5.jpg

This pub is a little gem, located in the North End of town, very friendly landlords with a great option of hand pull ales & lagers on tap, they offer wine in bottles which is a bit better but they do not have a massive selection available.

The food is fantastic, you will NOT find better pub food ever...the selection is fantastic from cold sandwiches & hot baguettes through to a fantastic mixed grill!

The pub offers a fantastic atmosphere with very friendly locals. This is a great place to come in the summer has has a nice size beer garden...it also has a nice surprise in the back also:

The Tithe Bar

I did forget to add this into the original script however I do think this is definitely worth a mention. As someone who does like to go away from the main stream offerings this Bar & Brasserie offers a great selection of different Hand Pull Ales, Lagers & Ciders (including cloudy!), the offering change fairly often and even have a chalk board up showing what is available and what is coming next.

This place offers a good atmosphere and is a very popular place for people to gather for after work drinks. It has just undergone a recent refurb which I do think has made it loose some of the relaxed atmosphere it once had, but it is still a very pleasant and relaxing place to go for a drink.

Food is good, you can either sit in the restaurant upstairs or sit on one of the tables downstairs if you want a less formal meal.

If you are ever passing or close to Northallerton I recommend you pop in to either of these pubs.

Bedale

I moved to a new build place 2 1/2 years ago from Northallerton to Bedale, even though only about 9 miles away it is a cracking place to live and is nicknamed 'The Gateway to the Dales'. Anyway on to the pubs, my 2 favorite are as follows:

The Three Coopers

pub-no-2624-three-coopers-bedale-north-yorkshire_zpseddb8c6a.jpg

Tucked away down a little side street (Emgate) is this little Gem. Offering a nice selection of beers and lagers, wine is served in little bottles and I think you have an option of 2 types of white, rose & red. Again has a nice little atmosphere with an open fire for those long winter evenings. I have never seen it packed but always just a nice steady amount of people in, and always locals.

I like going in to see the owners massive chocolate Labrador 'Rolo' who is always there to greet you!

The pub is actually a B&B although never stayed myself reviews don;t seem to bad. They also offer food but again never tried as yet.

Not much more to say other than I do recommend you make a visit.

The Black Swan

content_old_black_swan_bedale_zpsd13cce1a.jpg

Located in the centre of Bedale High Street is The Black Swan. This is quite a large pub which has a pool table at the bottom end which is good when you are out for a few with the lads.

I like this pub just for the friendly atmosphere, it doesn't offer the best selection of beers (Theakstons only) and the lager is Fosters or kronenbourg, however they do have a good selection of nice wine which is served by the glass or bottle.

Food is also served here, again never eaten here but never heard a bad thing and the food does look good.

Again not much to say about this apart from good friendly pub with a nice atmosphere.

The Wagon & Horses

content_the_waggon_and_horses_bedale_zps4c31fccb.jpg

The Wagon & Horses is located in the centre of the highstreet however is opposite The Black Swan.

Quite a small pub but plenty of seating and standing area and does get busy early doors on a Friday & Saturday.

They offer fantastic home cooked food, and a very nice Sunday lunch (I have actually eaten here so this is from experience!).

I like this pub as one of my favorite pints is Copper Dragon which this has on hand pull.

I would call this pub family friendly however it does seem to be the place the tradesmen go after a hard days graft and as such my GF prefers to drink in either the Three Coopers or The Black Swan. Please don't be put off as it is a real nice pub.

Masham

Masham is located about 7-8 miles away from Bedale and is the home of Theakston Brewery & The Black Sheep Brewery so it would be rude not to include one of these along with a very nice pub also.

The Black Sheep Brewery

index_zps85f04f24.jpg

The name is self explanatory and is deffinately a place to visit for all you real ale lovers. A great visiting centre, fantastic restaurant that serves very very good food and some very nice real ales!

images_zps4c476db9.jpg

Definitely worth the visit when you are in the area!

The Bay Horse

2473439_8e5461e3_zps03fefd55.jpg

It was actually by GF who found this little beauty out. This is a very nice pub to go to, offering very good ales & lager selections along with a great food menu.

IMG_8996_zpseb74a8b2.jpg

The food I would say is on the posh side of pub grub the environment and atmosphere is very nice and relaxed.

If you have dogs you will be glad to know this is a dog friendly pub, and when you go in you will see Hand & Tilly (the resident patterdales) running around and causing mischief!

There are a few more in other areas I will add to later but hope this adds some more information to this great thread!

Great thread idea. For Manchester there are a lot of options but my top 4 would be:-

Port Street Beer House
Set in the Northern Quarter it has a range of beers many places could only dream of. Great knowledge by the bar staff to

The Knott

Helps that this place is only round the corner from my work. Superb beer selection again with a wide range of cask ales. This place has won countless "Best Pub" awards and rightly so. The food is also fantastic from what i've have.

Taps

Unique bar, where each table has its own beer taps (you can specify which beers you want and be seated accordingly). What i initially thought would just be a gimic has become a bit of a regular place for me. Fantastic for lunchtime boozing where you might not want a whole pint (or more accurately where you finish your first pint but don't fancy another whole one). Food is also superb here.

Temple Bar

You won't find many reasons to visit ex-public toilets in your life time. But the Temple Bar is definately one exception. Cracking drinking environment.

From my are I can only really recommend one:

Barrel & Horn

Website with Gallery - http://barrelandhorn.com/ (you can see the back of my bald head in one of the photos :p)

This pub is owned by Fullers however Mike the Manager asked about a year / 18 months ago if it could be run in his style. They eventually agreed and it went from a drab place with a handfull of punters to one of the most unique bars, both in drinks and environment in the borough. Fullers have no started to roll this idea out around the country. They have 4 pumps that change weekly, along with a huge array of bottled beers complemented by a staple of about 16 constant taps. No carling or fosters in here...

I can't really describe what its like as anything I put into words will be incredibly lackluster, however if you're ever anywhere near Bromley, pop in

Taps sounds very interesting!

Sadly, Taps has changed a bit now. The tables with taps have gone and there are now only normal tables and a few self service taps in the middle of the place in addition to a normal bar. I can understand why they changed it as the bar tabs at the end of the night tended to be wildly erratic, but it's not half as fun. Last time I went we felt it had lost the magic and I doubt I'll bother going again.

Good pub recommendations otherwise though!

The Broadwater, in Broadwater (near Worthing, about 20 mins from Brighton) nothing special just a lot of tellys for the football and decent lagers. Simple as! :)

+1 for Bobos, great steak there too.

York Tap -

20 local beers of draft, 12 imports. constantly changing.

just off the top of my head.

Great idea!

Birmingham:
The Lord Clifden on Great Hampton St (Jewellery Quarter). Amazing ales from local breweries, great atmosphere and a huge beer garden. Food isn't bad either. Sister pub to the Red Lion which also has terrific ales. The Clifden stays open late Friday and Saturday with a DJ and has a brilliant friendly atmosphere with a mix of demographics young and old. Played beer pong on their table tennis table until the wee hours in November freezing my arse off. In the summer they BBQ until late in their garden which I can't wait to try. Free table football and Sky Sports 3D. Pretty much the only pub I would give five stars to in Birmingham that I've found so far.

Bacchus Bar (Burlington Arcade) - Hilarious medieval decor but decent beer and lots of more private spots to sit down.

Hunningham (Near Leamington Spa):
The Red Lion. Unbelievable country pub in an idyllic setting with great food and ales. The major problem with this place is that you have to drive there (better to cycle)! Cannot be beaten on a sunny summer afternoon.

Brighton
Tonnes of great pubs in Brighton but also lots of dross too. Below are some of my favourites.

The Cricketers (Black Lion St). Fine Sussex ales and great decor in the heart of the south lanes. Well worth a visit. Also try the Pump House on Market St if you want to watch the rugby in the lanes.

The Basketmakers Arms (North Lanes) - Phenomenal Fullers pub. Don't expect to find a seat unless you're early. Amazing selection of ales and a really friendly atmosphere. 8 hand pumps and a good whisky selection. Good food too.

The Eagle - Great food and a decent selection of ales. Bit of a livelier atmosphere at the weekend but not exactly dancing on the tables.

Wagon and Horses - Whisky is the speciality here. Massive selection right in the centre of town (Church St). Never eaten there but they serve good beer too. If you fancy rum instead the St James Tavern (St James St, Kemp Town) is good and does decent Thai food.

The 3 in 10 (Steine St) - I don't recall a time when this pub has shut. It always seems to be open into the small hours. Brighton is full of cheesy nightclubs so it's refreshing to sit in a late night pub with good music and a pint of ale.

Black Dove (St James St) - Their speciality is cocktails. Very knowledgeable staff and always good to take their recommendation. Brooklyn ale on tap if you don't fancy a cocktail.

Honourable mentions to The George (opposite the hospital), The Bristol Arms (table tennis!) and the Thomas Kemp. All in Kemp town and all decent for a beer.

(I miss Brighton :()

The Crooked House pub is quite an interesting pub near me in The Black Country. One side of the pub is 4 feet lower than the other due to subsidance from local mining in the 1800's - bit of a mind boggler if you've had a few, but it's a fascinating building. I haven't been since I was a kid having only recently moved back to the area, but the reviews are good regarding food/local ales, and it's owned by locals who have an affinity with the place and are knowledgable about the pub and the local area.

Have plenty of suggestions for Cheshire but will add one from being on holiday before Easter

The Lord Nelson - Southwold (Suffolk)

Superb food, open fire, really good atmosphere and, as you'd hope for a pub under a mile from the brewery (Adnams), a cracking pint. The Gunhill went down a treat. Just the job on a night when it's sub-zero outside.

friends of ham looks ace.

my few in maldon/heybridge essex are:

the malsters arms - my local. 4 ales from the cask and good lagers/cider. no dicks, tele's or pumping music. old fashioned bozzer.

the queens head, maldon. on the quay. at least 6 ales at all times, good food, restaurant and large garden on the river.

the blue boar, maldon. very old hotel/bar. farmers ale brewery on site so loads of ale from the cask. good food and wine, always busy. loads of spirits.

the heybridge inn - the street, heybridge. up from my local and ok now, good 3 ales on pump and football and pool room upstairs.
