Ok it's another rumour but I guess it's worth discussing...more evasive than installing games by the looks of it too IF TRUE.

IGN.com said:
Adding to the pile of the next Xbox's always-online rumors, anonymous sources state that the next-gen console will suspend games or applications if not connected to the internet.

Speaking to Kotaku, an unspecified source stated, "If the connection is interrupted then after a period of time -- currently three minutes, if I remember correctly -- the game/app is suspended and the network troubleshooter started."

Other sources indicated that this requirement may change over time, while others are said to have no knowledge about a constant internet connection for the console.

SimCity's disastrous launch by way of an always-online requirement served as a compelling argument against this implementation for consoles, but Microsoft appears adamant about a constant connection.

IGN learned recently that the next Xbox will apparently require all games to be installed before use. Do these prohibitive measures make you wary about the new hardware? Let us know in the comments below.

If this source is to be believed and games do indeed cease to play after 3 minutes of a down internet connection this could be rather frustrating to be honest.

However with the words "currently three minutes" then I would hope a more reasonable time IF this was to come into play would be adopted as I'm sure we all know any internet exchange can go down at some point and I for one wouldn't want to be prevented from gaming on my console.

As someone who is involved in an independent games shop we see this as a totally stupid and suicidal thing for them to do UNLESS sony do the same.

From the discussions with our customers the fact is that if one console is restrictive and the other isn't they will go for the less restrictive one. And this comes from die hard fans of both sides.

Always on internet for a games console? are they mad or just stupid.... that's a quarter of your customer base gone in and instant! not everyone has internet, and not everyone lets their kids use it for the xbox/ps3.

If the xbox does indeed have this requirement and also locks down games and prevents second hand games, and the ps4 doesn't... well its fairly obvious what will happen.

I don't mind to be honest. My internet is on all the time anyway. If it prevents hackers etc I'm all for it. As long as it doesn't then prevent used games being an option (without additional costs for the privilege).

Do not want, if it's online only. My consoles are online and net is fairly stable, so that's not a concern, but what happens when they decide to take the servers down?

I still play my old consoles, want to fire up the n64 for a bit a Mario, no problem. Online only, my games are only good as long as they keep the servers around. I'm not dropping £40 on a game, to play only as long as you say I can play.

To elaborate on my previous comment, every generation so far that has used optical media has relied upon the disc being in the drive at game startup to verify ownership, and subsequently immediately terminates the game on ejecting said disc. This has worked so far, excluding JTAG'ed Xbox 360s and Jailbroken PS3s - so I assume this is the audience they are trying to target whilst yet again the genuine consumers get inconvenienced?

online only xbox would be awful no one wants it apart from microsoft.. What happens in 15 years when you decide to play some old games?! I won't be surprised though if they make this move, I just hope and pray Sony don't do this as well then i'll be stuck with a Wii U as my only console option..

Is this really classed as a rumour still? Just with all that twitter stuff from MS Studios Adam Orth, I cant see why theres much doubt anymore. Ubisoft should sue for copying their uPlay system :p

Fair point actually - Valve pretty much promised to remove the Steam authentication servers if they ever went under to still allow you to play Steam games. MS wont disappear but what happens once the next next Xbox is out? They were very quick to drop the Xbox when the 360 came out, what assurances do we have that you can still play 'retro' nextbox games down the line. Hmmm could be an avenue for assuring/forcing backwards compatibility I guess...

ps3ud0

Trust me, if MS does it and achieves a good level of success with the next xbox you can bet Sony will quickly forget anything they have said previously and quickly follow suit. Rumble in control pads anyone?

Listening to a podcast today from some guys who had been at GDC and there doesn't seem much love for MS out there from those involved in the games industry. A lot of devs have been talking badly of them and this has been something going on for a while now.

Although not a huge issue for always on line it has issues. If my net is down and I wanted to play a game it seems ludicrous that I would not be able to use a console because of another completely separate service for which they have no control.

I really can't see this system being successful. It will just push people to the ps4. Sony must be running there hands together at this info and hoping it's true. There will be a lot of disappointed young kids at Xmas when they get a 720 and to only realise they can't play it because they don't have the Internet.

I'm interested to see what their subscription model is going to be first, if it passes that test then I'll worry about always on and not being able to buy second hand games.

Agreed, at first I was against it.

But if it stops people being lemons and modding/hacking on consoles then I don't care.

almost every game i own that has MP capability has been ruined by idiots.
