Poecilotheria rajaei, whilst reasonably interesting news in the spider community, is no great shakes as far as the general public are concerned.

India and Sri Lanka already have:

Poecilotheria fasciata
Poecilotheria formosa
Poecilotheria hanumavilasumica
Poecilotheria metallica
Poecilotheria miranda
Poecilotheria nallamalaiensis (dubious)
Poecilotheria ornata
Poecilotheria pederseni
Poecilotheria pococki
Poecilotheria regalis
Poecilotheria rufilata
Poecilotheria smithi
Poecilotheria striata
Poecilotheria subfusca
Poecilotheria tigrinawesseli
Poecilotheria uniformis

This species is no bigger, more venomous etc than any of the above existing species.

I hope that was Jeremy Beadles hand otherwise I am standing on a chair with a poker and a flamethrower tonight....

No, they really are that size. Bigger, really - they get up to a foot across and nobody has a hand that big. One might be able to sit on top of your head and poke its toes up your nose. Not that I suggest putting one on your head to test that.

Apparently it's not possible for spiders to be bigger than that on Earth with the existing atmosphere. Which is a good thing.
