Volvo XC70 / V70

I have got an old v70 (~10yrs), which I have inherited from my dad. They are lovely, reliable spacious family cars. Re old people comments; I never see properly old people driving volvos, it is more like 30-50 ( the age when you will have kids in the house!)

Lol mines a 2001 5-pot turbo, reasonably fast but sooo comfy. I'm 34, probably old before my age but not much else appeals to me apart from a newer version of the same thing! :o

I arranged to go have a look at another car today and got a call an hour later saying it had just sold. Maybe there's a higher demand for these cars than I initially thought!
Good XC70s seem to go quite quickly as they hit the "family estate" thing on the nose but add pretty decent 4x4 capabilities, look a little bit different and they're not particularly common. The interior quality helps as do those awesome seats (get heated front seats... seriously, they get warm enough to toast your backside even when it's -5 outside :) )

I've had mine 3 years(ish) now and I struggle to think what I'd replace it with as a great family all-rounder. We live in the south with family in the NW and it's the most comfortable cruiser I've had for taking the family and about a billion tons of assorted family crap up and down the M40/M6.

The only thing that annoys me (and annoy is a bit of a stretch) is the Bluetooth on my 09 model doesn't support streaming music from my phone although it does have a iphone/ipod/USB memory stick compatible USB socket in the armrest.

I have a flat cap, pipe, Werthers Originals and slippers on order. I've bought a Volvo!

Ended up with a 2012 XC70 D5 SE Lux with everything except active cruise control.

Thanks for the advice in this thread :)

Pick it up on Friday. Between now and then it will be getting a service, a few stone chips and an alloy touched up.

I think the first task will be to train the voice controlled navigation to my accent. It recognised my version of "Southampton" as "North Walsham" :D

I'll report back with ownership experiences as there doesn't seem to be a great deal of documented experiences out there on the XC70.

Now to drop the Ducati into everyday conversation...

Now all you have to do is get the engine mapped!!

Well worth it IMO, increase in power, autos change a tad quicker and MPG is slightly increased too.

Depending on what D5 you have in there, 240HP and 500 NM is possible :o

Is that the Polestar thing?
IIRC the engine is the 215bhp version if that makes any difference?

I love these. What a stonking hunk of metal for the money. They really are a well hidden gem that not many folk know about. Quite possibly be one of my next cars although the current model is more than likely due a complete revamp fairly soon I would imagine.

Congrats on the purchase, cracking car and dare I say it, great looking too. ;)

Nice but I can't help thinking you are doing this wrong. Shouldn't it be a 3.0 Turbo on Texan plates (It was Texas, wasn't it?)? :p

I would say the exterior looks don't do it for me with it's stupid high-up-stance, but I can totally understand it based on your requirements. I've got a soft spot for Volvos because I care more about comfort and practicality than driving experience.

Louisiana :p
And that will come one day although I doubt it'll be anything European due to the ridiculous prices over there!

I thought I'd report back after having the car for a few days.

Initial impressions are great. Very comfortable, very relaxing to drive on the commute and a bit easier on the diesel than the 330d, although not by enough to make any major difference. We went shopping on Sunday and managed to fill the boot which took 20 minutes to unload. We could not believe how much fits in there!

The Sensus navigation and stereo are easy to use and have plenty of features. The heated seats are powerful enough to bake a few potatoes should the need arise :D

Downsides include the wooly vague steering. This took a bit of getting used to on the motorway. With the BMW, the car went where you pointed it, with the Volvo, it can drift ever so slightly even with the wheel held straight and true. The other small gripe is the agricultural sound of the D5 engine. I love the engine but even when warm it sounds a lot less refined than the BMW unit around town. Above 40mph it's unnoticeable.

We love it! I'm tempted to go looking for some green lanes to see how it performs there. Not out of necessity, just curiosity.
