Buying a new bed

I need a new bed for me and the Mrs.

It seems that a double bed isn't big enough for us and we are finding it difficult.

We need a kingsize bed.

We went into a few shops but the price was £600 at least (bed + mattress) - that was lowest price we can find but when we go online we can get a much cheaper deal

why is that?

What should we be aware of when buying online? (apart from the obvious not being able to test the product first)
 
It's the same as everything else less overheads and other costs mean it's much cheaper to sell online, if you can have a look around ebay for the frames for pickup in your local area.
My house mate got a super king frame and memory foam topped mattress for £200, personally I'd have ditched the mattress and picked up a new one but even doing that £200 for the frame which is really good quality and could probably survive a bomb blast is a bargain.

that is a good point I didn't think of ebay/gum tree but then there is the transportation involved that be a mission.

I would also buy a new mattress might as well.

Online sellers (websites) are so much cheaper
 
If you don't mind driving a van then you can hire a transit for £50ish a day so it would still work out cheaper than buying new if you get a good deal.
 
You can get a decent mattress from mattress man for about £250-300. But a decent king size bed is going to cost £300.

I paid £160 for my silent night mattress and it is excellent quality. I love it, but only a double. I still need to buy a bed frame, but not sure if i want to spend a lot to get a nice one or just go cheap on it. www.getlaidbeds.co.uk has some high quality wood beds. But mattress man has the same frames that the rest of the bed suppliers have, well most of them, have the same frames.

My only bit of advice is to buy the best mattress you can afford. I bought a memory foam mattress and wish I didn't. Next time I will buy a decent pocket spring and horse hair mattress.

Theoretically I could buy the frame of the bed from one place and mattress from another
got me thinking
 
I would go Super KS as King Size isn't that much bigger than a double. Just recently made the change and there's so much more room, plus I now don't wake up with my feet sticking out the bottom of the bed :)

One note to add, no matter the size of the bed your wife will still manage to hog all the blankets. I think they are secretly trained in the art.


edit: just to add we went with a memory foam mattress and I must admit I love it. Very comfortable and no future springs sticking in my ribs.
 
i use a king size duvet with my double sized bed to give that bit more blanket and if in the rare event that i ever have to share my bed, then there should be enough blanket, my sister gave me the idea of buying a larger duvet than the mattress size.

I bought a new pillow on the weekend, norway firm pillow, realy comfortable. it is called Aerelle Pillow Firm 100% Cotton
 
OP. have a look in bed stores and try to get an ex display.

i have just bought my 2nd ex display bed. first was a £1k bed for £300 and the new one is a super kingsize that was £5k and we got it for £1.5k. really comfy too. plus its all natural so silk etc and those topper mattresses get you really hot in the summer so i will never have one of those again.

No didnt work out well at all because you end up leaving a dent in the mattress and it takes a good few days for the foam to expand back to its original firmness/shape; so obviously if you're sleeping in it every night you just end up carving a big dent in it. Not good for someone like me who likes to have some movement and who doesnt sleep in the same position every night.
