Not having a spotter shouldn't hold you back, the fear of being crushed under a 100kg BB definitely helped me get the rep :D
 
If you train in a commercial gym you can ask someone for a spot, I've never been turned down.

Just make sure you explain to them exactly how you want spotted or else you could end up with someone yanking the bar away at the first sign of you actually pushing yourself.
 
There is a lot of scope for bad technique, but then that arguement could be used in just about any exercise.

I found I gained a lot of aesthetics when I used to DB press, compared to BB anyway.

Regarding the better aesthetics, I'm sure there's something about bigger ROM/etc. with dumbells vs. barbell, but...

Dude, that's just because they want to look cool because your bench is crazy. I can only just about deadlift what you bench, so most people would just slip discs trying to spot you. ;) :D
 
Training to failure regularly or even frequently is not necessary. Intensity is important but this can be acheived without hitting failure.
