You can tell quality, yes. There is no way of 100% ascertaining whether a bed will be comfortable for you over the next 20 years or not, but certainly using it properly for 30 days is better than 30 minutes in a shop.
Because John Lewis don't mark up lower quality products to that extent, and I am placing my bets on while you couldn't tell the difference in 15 minutes bouncing on the bed, you could in a week of sleeping it and certainly the condition of it within 5 years of use![]()
Mattresses aren't exempt of high street markups. JL's expenses (on top of the mattress manufacturer's) are far more than those of an independent mattress manufacturer.
