Enthusiasm for Life

I find it all cringe worthy too platypus, and no it doesn't mean im suicidal :) just hate over optimistic, perma happy, fake smile people.

deadpan and dry sarcastic humour helps.

Ah a kindred soul.

Everyone thinks I'm a morose, doom and gloom boring stick in te mud at work.

Not at all, I just hate working (though paradoxically not my job) and I hate their over happy kiddieness that any form of extra engagement with them would involve me wielding an axe :p I think they would probably prefer "I can't be bothered" me :p

As Bill Bailey put it: "Of course, the universe is gradually slowing down isn't it? And will eventually collapse inwardly on itself according to the laws of entropy, when all thermal and mechanical functions fail. Thus rendering all human endeavour ultimately pointless... Just to get the gig into some kind of context."

I concede, quoting that wasn't especially helpful, but it was the first thing that sprang to mind. Would it be fair to say that you're not driven towards the things that the media and society in general say that we should covert, and as a result you feel somewhat disjointed? Or am I reading between lines that aren't there?

May I ask what you do now? Or if you would prefer not to answer, can you advise how often you feel satisfied in your current job?
Fluid/continuum mechanics research at present, currently working on a rheology software project. It's fine. Pays well ;).

Cracking the rest of that album out now!

Always reminds me of spring.

Anyway OP probably has a different way of expressing enjoyment/enthusiasm for things to the average person. So long as you're doing roughly what you want/actually makes you happy then being overtly expressive about it isn't really needed....

I've been told that I have no enthusiasm. This is probably true, but I was wondering; how many people do have a genuine enthusiasm for life? If so, how do you go about obtaining it?

Do you think that one requires enthusiasm in order to be happy?

Find things that you have a passion for and that will keep you occupied throught life.

I feel the same way. Unfortunately, I haven't figured out what to do about it yet. That said, I started reading the Stoics recently, starting with some Seneca and now Epictetus' "Enchiridion" which seem to fit well with my cravings for a rational approach to dealing with life.

It's hard to know what to suggest to you, however, as all I know about you is that you're a keen runner and cyclist. Besides, it sounds as though you're doing better than I am anyway, so who am I to offer advice? :)

Focus on the little things. Enjoy good food, sunshine , social relationships. I like to interact with people. Whether it be on this forum , in work. Outside work in the pub or hillwalking. Etc...

Read a good book, watch a great movie, listen to an amazing album, learn something new. challenge yourself, get better at something ( I'm learning Polish at the moment. Don't know much but I know more than nothing and that makes me feel good )

Life is a train journey from A to B & it's up to you how you fill your time during the trip.

but what if the train keeps coming of the rails and you find yourself thinking, what's the point in putting the bugger back on the rails, just to get to B. B being death...

I bet everyone loves you at parties.
