Been told i may need a new gearbox on my Renault Megane 08....

had a horrid grinding noise come from it when on the m69, and now it Whines like a biatch and sounds like a large electric motor lol.

Garage said i will need a new one, and can be looking at £1k+

Anyone got any idea how much Renault Gear boxes go for and if its a decent price?

Common on renault gearboxes :p

I used to run trafic's as my minibuses had 4 of them! go
The driveshaft seals fail causing oil loss, then the end bearings wear away really fast causing it to scrape against the inside (i've one in the garage actually ill get a pic for ya

Below is where the shaft has worn the bearing holdy bit away (should look like the hole below and left a bit from the worn one)

And this is the bearings that should sit in there

On a side note I think i got my replacements for 600 each, unsure if they are the same mind.

Had the same problem on 4 of the Trafic's and one laguna

Best thing to do is get your current box out, sent off and refurbed. Somewhere like Agency Transmissions do many Renault Sport boxes.

I'll second getting your 'box refurbished as you get a known good gearbox back for not THAT much money especially compared to a new one which will be £££!, i wouldn't want a 2nd had one just in case as you never know how many miles they've done etc especially with Renaults as they do seem to eat gearboxes on certain models.

If its a sports gearbox its usually a good opportunity to upgrade stuff like syncros and diffs if its being rebuilt anyway but it depends if its a bogo megane or an tuned RS.

My wife has a Clio 197 which is notorious for a week gearbox so when/if that goes we'll be getting it rebuilt by one of the Renault specialists.

What mileage has it done?

I'd be tempted to contact Renault, surely a gearbox should last longer than 5 years? Unless of course you've done starship mileage.

What engine? Manual, auto?

Thank you, i will ask my garage if they can get it refurbed.

Close to 80k mate, Decent amount for its age.
We have had it from new.

Replaced all wheel bearings, new set of tires and front and back discs and pads the other day, was well over due and cost close to £1.5k for the lot! I dont have much left in the tank for new box ;(

The Joys of motoring eh

Full service history with Renault? If so, they may give some goodwill.

Nah dont think so. When shifting from 4th to 5th the gearbox has a horrid grindy whine that stays untill down to third then its a high pitched drone that gets lower the slower I go.

Indeed. It is only 5 years old and has hardly done moon mileage yet. You would have thought a gearbox should last longer than that.

I would certainly try Renault for some goodwill.

On my friends Clio 200 (common as muck problem) he got 85% contribution from Renault. 50% of that was because it was one month out of warranty. Which left him with a bill of £400 being main dealer parts/labour prices. It also helped that it was main dealer service history.

So a possible 35% goodwill, although the Clio is newer and done under half the miles...

Probably cheaper to refurb independently.
