New driver.. New car... First lot of insurance

So as some of you seem I be Guru's at this I'm just wondering where to start?

First up I know my insurance will be expensive but I am hoping it can be kept down to something at least 'reasonable' say £1200 or so? Then again I assume that might not be possible?

Second up car wise.. I need something that's small enough to be cheap but big enough to accommodate a baby seat and pram! Not asking for much eh :o

After a lot of looking around and reading I am probably more confused now than before... However I do need to sort something before the 19th

For anyone who cares we only have about £1200 tops for a car so anyone fancy pointing me in the direction I need to head?
 
A few things that used to bring my premium down:

- Put both parents on as named drivers (or spouse if you are married and he/she has good experience)
- Put annual mileage at 6,000 or below
- Overnight location as driveway (this is now cheaper than garage for some reason)
- Car Insurance Job Picker - Use this tool to try and "tweak" your job title to find the cheapest one...
 
Start with the 1.6 Focus and go from there, get some insurance quotes in.

It's low mileage so make sure your insurance know exactly what you'll be covering, in my experience the lower the mileage quoted makes a substantial difference.

Play around with some insurance comparison sites, I normally use Go Compare.

Do you have any requirements for the vehicle in terms of performance, economy and comfort?

A spouse is a major factor in insurance premiums, mine are cut around 30% thanks to this. Not limited to marriage (edit).

I have found that insurance is cheaper if it's parked on the road. If you fit this bill let them know.

I asked my insurance company about this and apparently they get a lot of claims from people who crash into their garages when parking :eek:

I figured it would be something along those lines, or claims for paint pots falling from shelves :p

Also try all the comparison sites, they tend to work out cheaper for me.

I ended up buying my insurance through Quidco Compare as I got an extra £26 cashback from my cheapest quote :D.
 
My first year was £1600 on a 1.2 corsa, that was last year. I honestly don't think a 1.6 engine for a first year driver will be anywhere close to the OPs £1200 ideal budget for insurance.

Insurance is about statistics. I bet more new drivers crash 1.2 Corsas than 1.6 Focuses (Foci?!) so the insurance will probably be cheaper.

Also engine size isn't a massive factor in insurance costs.

I've found the Insurance group's barely have an influence on my prices...

I've found that the newer the car the cheaper the quote. However with such a low budget, I would just try a few different makes and models using a search comparison site, you will be surprised what is cheaper than others...
 
Strangely as above a Corsa is more expensive in most cases for me compared to a focus 1.6...

Something along the lines of
Focus £1305
Corsa £1450
