New driver.. New car... First lot of insurance

Strangely as above a Corsa is more expensive in most cases for me compared to a focus 1.6...

Something along the lines of
Focus £1305
Corsa £1450

Interesting are you using moneysupermarket.com? Those quotes seem cheaper than what I got :p

That Honda seems a bargain but ideally you want something economic unless you have the money for high petrol costs ofc :p

Edit: Actually that's monthly cost I got that was expensive, paying annual was far cheaper :p

Am I the only one that doesn't get these counter intuitive quotes.

I've tried getting insured on a 1.6 focus and similarly sized cars and the quote is always higher than a 1.2/1.4 Fiesta.

I used a few different ones to check :)

Doing just 3000-4000 miles per year, that'll be fine, you'd be talking in terms of £10s per year saving by changing to something more economical rather than £100s.

The fuel costs aren't going to be monstrous on it at such low mileage.

If you can stretch your budget a smidge you could pick up like a 02/52 plate Renault Clio DCI 65, can get upto 75mpg, and insurance for me having been driving for 3 years is like £550, so can't see it being mega expensive.

They are for a new drive due to engine size and turbo I have dci 100 which is same insurance as the 80 and 65 but was just shy of £3000 for my first year :o

Brother in law is in the same situation.

He found a 1.0 toyota yaris was doable for under £1200 with parents on the insurance.

From memory

1.6 Focus - £1500
1.2 Fiesta - £1600
1.0 Yaris - £1175

75mpg will be of no relevance to the op as he's doing less than 4000 miles a year, no need to have complicated things to break (turbos etc) for no gain to him at all.

was in the same position on sept/oct 2012

here was my quotes from gocompare with 0 ncd, 1yr 9mths license and comprehensive cover 500 excess, age 21

corsa 1.2 sxi £1400
focus 1.4 £1400
focus 1.6 £1500
corsa 1.0 £1100

I was planning on buying a focus 1.6 as was advised here but at that time I couldnt find any within local range and since I needed the car fast I decided to buy an 2004 clio dci 65

went to a bunch of local insurance stores and was surprised with a quotation of £1200 for a comprehensive cover with 500 excess and 10k annual mileage

my advise is call or drop in a branch as you can tell them additional info. like i was a named driver on my dad's car for 1 year and they considered that in their calculations and prbbly reduced my premium by a bit :D

The lowest i've managed to get my quote down was to £1000 on a 4 year old 1.25L fiesta, to put that into comparison the best quote I could get on a 4 year old 1.6L focus was about £1500. Thats with 0 NCD, and 4 months holding a license.

But then again it's also a postcode lottery on top of that :(

Well chaps

After a lot of looking around and many random prices between cars that are almost identical we may have settled on a Citroen C3 - hopefully off to view it today

£900 for the car and £1200 for the insurance

I am surprised just how random the quotes are/were overall but heyho

Fiesta 1.25

Cheap and cheerful and more than good enough as a first time car. For the money you may be able to find a mk6, but mk5 will be readily available.

Forget the 1.3 engine its naff, insurance will be low and its more than practical for your needs.
