Hey guys, I've tried for help in the Memory section of Hardware, but I don't seem to be getting anywhere. My original thread is here:

http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=18503219

Unfortunately, I simply can't figure out what component is causing the BSODs. Here is the story so far.

My specs are:

"Krypton Z77 ROG" Intel Core i5 3570K 3.40GHz @ 4.60GHz DDR3 Ivybridge Overclocked Bundle:
> Asus Z77 Maximus V Gene Intel Z77 (Socket 1155) DDR3 Motherboard
> Intel Core i5-3570K 3.40GHz @ 4.60GHz (Ivybridge) Socket LGA1155 Processor (77W)
> GeIL Black Dragon 16GB (2x8GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C11 1600MHz Dual Channel

Gigabyte ATI Radeon HD 7970 Windforce 3X 3072MB GDDR5

Samsung 256GB SSD 840 PRO SATA 6Gb/s Basic

Seagate Barracuda 2TB 7200RPM SATA 6Gb/s 64MB Cache

Corsair Professional Series HX+ 850W '80+ Gold' Modular Power Supply

Now, I've been getting BSODs mainly when booting into Windows 7 "from cold". i.e. on a morning after the PC has been off all night. However there have been a couple of instances when a BSOD appeared mid-session. Once when gaming and once when browsing.

Anyway, I thought it was a memory problem after Googling some of my BSOD errors.

Here are some of the errors I have been getting:

Code:

So, I've been emailing OCUK support who've been rather helpful, but obviously it's out of hours now.

So far I have tried:

MemCheck86 with both sticks of RAM in - this throws up many memory errors after a 9 hour session.

I was advised by OCUK to remove the battery from my mobo. This did not help.

I was advised to run MemCheck86 with each stick of RAM separately. I did this and individually they did not throw up any errors at all after 9 hours each.

I then did some more Googling and read that it could be down to drivers. So I uninstalled my Catalyst drivers and removed them with Driver Sweeper. Upon rebooting (resolution all low - no graphics drivers installed whatsoever), I get an IMMEDIATE BSOD every single time.

At this point I had to use a system restore because I simply could not get into Windows and I couldn't reinstall Catalyst from Safe Mode for some reason.

The BSODs which occurred here are unfortunately lost to the ether because the system restore has removed them from BlueScreenView. However, they seemed to mention USB and USB3 from what I could see quickly on my screen.

So... Any ideas? Is the graphics card dodgy? Motherboard? Something else? I'm at the end of my tether here. £1500 system, less than a week old and getting BSODs regularly.

I'm running Windows 7 64 home edition. All of my drivers are up to date as far as I can tell.

Can we boot off a live unix CD / USB and leave the system to see if it bluescreens? This will rule out the OS.

Can we try each RAM stick on it's own in each RAM slot? This could identify a bad RAM slot.

Are there any overclock settings or memory timings set in the BIOS?

Have you updated the BIOS? Got the latest mobo drivers?

The system is overclocked, yes. Because OCUK overclocked it. It's a pre-clocked bundle. However, after uninstalling my graphics drivers and all of the BSODs were happening, they continued to happen even when I loaded the mobo's default profile. i.e. no overclocks.

I should add, I really have no idea about overclocking. That's why I bought the bloody bundle!

As for Unix, etc, *shrugs*. No idea what to do there.

I don't think it's a faulty RAM slot because the BSOD occurs with one stick or two in the system, and both sticks have been tested alone in the same slot with no errors. Basically, even with just one stick in the "error-free" slot, I still get BSODs.

The mobo is up to date as far as I'm aware.

Didn't realise that existed!

Just got another new BSOD:

Code:
041013-7378-01.dmp	10/04/2013 00:18:45	SYSTEM_SERVICE_EXCEPTION	0x0000003b	00000000`c000001d	fffff880`046e180e	fffff880`08582c90	00000000`00000000	atikmpag.sys	atikmpag.sys+4b80e x64	ntoskrnl.exe+75c40 C:\Windows\Minidump\041013-7378-01.dmp	4	15	7601	277,248

atikmpag.sys this time...

You could try reseating your Heatsink on the CPU.

sometimes if its not quite on properly it puts extra pressure on the memory controller on the CPU causing it to fail

Memtest works outside of windows as a live CD. The fact that memtest fails with both sticks indicates there is a memory related error. Remember that memtest checks for memory related problems.

When you tested the individual sticks, did you try them in the same slot? If so, you need to try the same stick in the other slots:

Try using one memory stick at a time and try the single sticks in different slots. If one stick of memory fails in all slots, then its almost certainly a RAM problem. If the working RAM stick works in one slot but not another, then this is certainly going to be an Integrated Memory Controller (IMC) problem which is a faulty CPU. You're only testing the RAM here so don't worry about dual or triple channel memory for the test.

Hope that helps.

Have you tried booting using the integrated intel hd graphics? you could have a dodgy graphics card, been looking and i believe there is an hdmi port and a mini display port on the back

It sounds like there is a problem with the overclock. If it shows memtest problems when they are both installed but not individually then it may be bad overclock settings and with 2x8Gb may be putting a strain on the IMC. Does the system blue screen or have any issues if you run/use it with 1 stick of memory?

You could also set the bios to the default settings and see if it still causes you issues. If not then the overclock settings is where to start.. ;)
