Hi guys

I had a go in a V12 S600 Merc on tuesday - it was sublime, 59k miles, immaculate condition but up for 6750.

If I bought it, it'd be used for doing my Chester -> Plymouth commute twice a week. I have a fuel card so economy isn't an issue, but what are they like to live with - is this going to be a horrific money pit?

Here's the car by the way

any thoughts? how would this compare to a 7 series beemer for example

This car is non comparable to an E38 7-series of the era, it is streets ahead with far better technology, and a different class of ride. It was far more expensive when new.

I am obviously a big fan of these, I ran an S430 model for over 100k miles. I also now have an E65 7-series so I can be fairly unbiased between brands.

However, at that price, no chance. That money quite literally buys a facelift E65, which is a whole different generation of car, with again much newer technology, and a heavily revised engine line-up from the era of the old N/A 360hp 5.8 V12 found in that S600L. If you ignore the V12 engine, you can buy an S500L for 1/3rd of that price for example. Rightly or wrongly I don't think this era of S-Class pre facelift is worth much north of around £3k. It would be a different story if you were talking a facelift S600L Bi-Turbo, or an AMG model.

Yeah, although I struggle to recommend a 7-series over an S-Class due to the S-Class being like for like so much better, there are certain budgets where the 7-series makes far more sense.

You can squeeze a 2005 750i in for this ballpark if you stretch the budget up slightly, which has as much power as the pre facelift S600 anyway and is a 5 year newer design of car.

nice one - actually bit surprised the s600 only pushed out 360 bhp, i naiveily assumed it'd be well in the 400's.

Or, go for an S500L, you will get a facelift W220 S500L for this budget comfortably which updates the car nicely. The V8 engine is a very good engine, absolutely bombproof, tried and tested and likely to never have issue.

is this quite overpriced then?

No, but the pre facelift 600 is a pointless car when you take into account the prices they command. The 500 is quite literally half the price used, and the 5.0L even remaps to around 330hp with no other modifications which takes it within 30hp of the old V12. The difference behind the wheel is not hugely noticeable.

I definitely think Ramirez should, Saloons are not my bag now :)

I just bought a 2000 X reg E55 AMG estate :D

Did I do good.... Full MBSH, 1 owner from new, 150k miles for £3000?

Not a sniff of rust, it's been very well loved.
