Bought a game server from a US based company. Does the Distance Selling Regulation apply to things bought from the US? The only thing I found which I'm questioning is that its only 3 days in the USA but 7 days here.

Anyone shed some light on this?

Distance selling regulations apply to UK customers wherever the items were bought. There are exceptions on certain products. When you say server, do you mean a physical server or a rental of a companies server? If it's the latter you probably won't be covered by DSR.

UK DSR won't apply to stuff bought from a company outside of the UK, also as a UK resident purchasing from a US company you probably won't have the same rights as a US resident.

Just a regular game server. So what does it come under?

Is there no law in america to do with cooling off periods at all?

AFAIK you don't have any protection as such in this case - consumer laws are for the protection of the consumers resident in the country they apply to so as a UK citizen you won't be covered by US consumer law and a (purely) US company doesn't have to comply with UK consumer law.

EDIT: What are the terms and conditions related to the hosting? a lot of game server hosts have no quibble refunds if your not entirely happy within the first <X> days.

Excellent, thank you :)

The hosting has been great, the admin panel is good but there are a few oddly worded things that slightly deceive you.

For example they say that you are only limited by your imagination on what mod you can install (Running Arma2) so I wanted to install dayz_epoch. Now they have a list of supported mods so I'm led to believe if I use one of these I'll get support but obviously if I do my own tinkering its on my own head.

I tried to upload everything I need to run this mod and it says you have full access via ftp, however when you try and upload .bat files or .cmd or .exe or .dll.. all of which I need to be able to do, it doesn't allow it giving me a permission error which is confirmed by a support ticket stating those are not allowed. I rented the server with running a specific mod and under the bampf it looked possible and as I can't do it, the service isnt fit for my needs.

I appreciate the replies people and I'm amazed my thread has managed this far without being trolled ;)

I'll let you know how it goes.

Where does it say this?

Tbh, I hope you don't get a refund - as bad as it sounds; you should really ask before you 'buy'.

Does the "limited by your imagination on what mod you can install" actually count towards the game server or just dedicated servers?

As far as I'm aware, no?

I think it might do...

Cancelling a service contract

If you're buying a service, such as gym membership or a cleaning service, you can usually cancel up to seven working days from the day after you enter into the contract.

But there are some contracts you can’t cancel simply because you change your mind, including:
•contracts for transport and some leisure services to be provided on a specific date eg hotel bookings, flights, car hire, concert and other event tickets
•contracts for services where you agreed to the service starting before the seven working days has expired - as long as the seller has provided all the information detailed above

If the seller has failed to comply with the requirements to provide information, your right to cancel doesn’t end until seven working days from the day after the seller does comply.

This is up to a maximum of three months and seven working days from when you placed your order.

Although, be aware that this doesn't apply to specific date contracts for transport services and events.

Bit of a tricky one, its not unusual infact common practise with game server hosts to not allow 3rd party executable files to be uploaded but common mods are usually supported (with internal deployment of executables) - I've not looked into it but dayz_epoch sounds like its more of a stand alone/total conversion for the arma2 engine rather than a simple mod in this case he probably should have checked with the host before buying that they supported dayz or put in a support request to see if they will look into supporting it (most hosts will build in support for common mods/total conversions aslong as the server has the appropriate binaries for the hosting platform).

After some chit chat, they've agreed to give us 50% discount for next months rental aswell as installing the mod we want, never asked for the discount they offered it. So far the customer service has been great, we tried with another company and they just didnt care and they gave us a refund (still pending, should come through paypal in the next few days) as they were absolutely shocking.

From what I could see there was no mention of not being able to upload certain file types or changing the command line, both of which we needed to do to fulfill the ability to customize to our imaginations content.

http://www.vilayer.com/gameinfo/dayz-package.html - thats what we went for.

You are free to use any tools and make any modifications you want. This options also provides you with access to all server and client side source code. This means you have the full ability to make modifications or install custom scripts. Your imagination is the limit.

I guess the only part loaded bit of that is "custom scripts" what does that exactly mean?
