Hi there, I'm planing on buliding a gaming PC using the MSI HD 7950 Twin Frozr lll and a 500 watt PSU. So my question is will this be able to handle 1440p resolution. CPU is an Intel 3rd Generation Core i5-3570K.

Cheers

Yes. At 1440p with a 7950 you might have to tweak a few settings here and there but you will still get a good experience. As long as that 500w PSU is a good brand it will be ok but will not leave much in the tank. A Decent 650w would be a better choice.

Thanks for the reply. Sadly my budget couldn't stretch to the 650 watt after purchasing the GPU so opted for the corsair CX 500 bronze. Should that be sufficient ?

Are you overclocking your cpu and gpu? The 500w should cover stock no problem, but a heavy overclock on both components will put more strain on the psu.

The 7950 will be fine for 1440p, but some titles will require a drop in AA, but at that high res you won't notice the difference.

Not planing on OC at the moment but if I do down the line will I require a 650 watt minimum ?

I have just got 2 1440p screens stuck into my gigabyte 7950. Handles BF3, tomb raider, bioshock all on top graphics 60 frames+. Which is fine for me. I do turn AA off though, i don't really seem to need it.

Sorry but no. I run 2 7970s and with everything turned up tombraider and BF3 both drop below 60. TR quite regular in fact. I only got the 2nd 7970 because 1 couldnt handle games maxed at that res and I dont like turning things down. Not being funny mate just saying

Tomb Raider was a bit less, granted. But with TressFX on. And that takes up a fair amount.

Not saying it dosnt hit 60 mate, I'm saying it dips below quite regular. To say to him a 7950 will grant him 60 at 1400p isnt true and I did'nt want him buying it and being disapointed is all :)

Plus itll never handle crysis 3 and far cry 3 at that res. Its takes 2 7970s and AA turned off to run them on ultra settings (for my personal tastes anyways).

fair enough. But still, by all means playable. I would say its definitely worth while getting 1440p. suppose he could always upgrade his GPU when the games start hitting harder.

Best graphics upgrade ive made in ages mate jumping to a higher res. Its more than playable with a 7950 but you would have to sacrifice a few settings to get vsynced 60
