Took of in first gear and boom, major underpowered, huge pool of black smoke coming out of exhaust. It's not in limp mode, but everytime I drive now there is no turbo and it bucks like a bronco.

Is this the turbo gone or could it be a loose pipe somewhere?

It could well be the turbo (especially with the smoke) but it's well worth checking for popped hoses.

Had this myself not long ago (though luckily I found a jubilee had simply rusted away and gave up on life) - not a nice feeling but you're best going out and actually looking first!

Turbos can be sorted relatively inexpensively if you're able to have the car off the road for a week or so whilst it's sent for a refurb.

Had similar on the old work van, it was the intake pipe to the turbo which had worn and then when the turbo sucked it would crush down and stop air flow.

Pipe on the underside of the car just above the engine tray had come off, clipped back on but the clip wont hold it properly, even though I tried to tighten it, in the end had to use some duct tape, big jubilee clip and a couple of cable ties.

I am hoping it holds for now

So glad it wasnt the turbo!

The standard clamps don't seem to tighten much though, I tried bending in to see if was any better at holding but the pipe was quite loose, there isn't another mechanism that locks these in place? Could try and buy a new clamp.

Have you tried to put a massive jubilee on or something? You should be worrying about over tightening and breaking something not the other way round, get a smaller one if this is the case. Or the vw clip of course, I doubt they're expensive

I renewed all the clamps on my 1.8t three years ago with items from toolstation as they have nice quality jubilee clips

No leaks since
