For a long time now AMD has been chatting about releasing an MST hub for graphics cards. Basically it is a product that will take one DP connection, and then can split three the signal to three full HD (1080p60) links. This is an uber small one page review as Club3D just released such a product. Spending just a small news item on it didn't feel right, as this is pretty interesting technology.

DisplayPort 1.2 MST only has enough bandwidth for 2x 1600/1440p60 displays on a single cable.

As for the graphics horsepower you'd need for 6 monitors, it really comes down to your framerate divided by 6. That's a safe ballpark. If you can get that number over 30 by adjusting settings or adding more GPUs, you're on your way.

I would say that the frame rate divided by 6 should be put in to context of only being a very general guide, as when the resolution goes up, the demands don't necessarily go up in a linear fashion. For example, generally bench marks indicate that going from a single 2560x1440 monitor to three only reduces the performance by around 30-40%.
 
You're right, it's a very rough guideline. Tripling the resolution (for example) does not necessarily triple the quantity of on-screen textures, as there's considerable (creative) repetition in games to conserve fillrate and the like.
 
I thought mst would never see the light of day. I remember whwn these were first mwntioned back when AMD launched the 6000 series , seems ages ago now.
