hi guys i loaded the asus rampage iv extreme gamers oc profile yesterday oc @4.7ghz ran prime 95 and it failed at 7h and 8 minutes..

all the other 11 working was still going just worker 10 failed im new to this so i don't know what would cause this my system setup is

asus rampage iv extreme mb

PC3 19200 gskill ripjawsz 32gb ram

i7 3960x @4.7ghz

gtx 570

If it fails it's often related to low voltage however, it can be a variety of things. 7 hours is pretty good and you could get away with that as most things you do on a computer wont stress it at 100% for 7 hours.

You could try to increase the voltage to see if you can get it stable, but I am unsure what the max recommended voltage is for such processor :(

running it again 4h in so far so good changed it to 1.415v
 
Over a long period like that all it takes is a change in the weather to send ambient temps up and it can cause a CPU to become unstable.

It's best to do your overclocking/stress testing in the summer or turn off a case fan or two to emulate the summer heat, lots of people will overclock in winter and then come summer or a hot day they find that their overclock is not stable.

its 22c in my room been running for 9h so far so good max temp 80c
 
Just use the PC, I do 30 runs of intel burn test on very high, that gets the chip running really hard, harder than prime can manage.

each run takes less than a minute, if it can pass 30 runs of intel burn then your golden.

also 80c for a custom water loop? I realise its a 3960x at 4.7 but thats seems a little high?

thats at max temp on large fft ran for 12 hours
It had no errors it offers around 36-42c I got 64c max when I was playing bf3

If it fails after 5 seconds or 50 hours it doesn't matter, either way it's unstable and that means random black screens sooner rather than later as well as random corruption of system files over time.

Also if you fired up IBT on max ud prob find the temps went a bit hgher still..
 
Hey buddy, I agree with the others, 80c is too high especially for water. Are you not getting alarms? Take a look at your loop, no obsturctions or anything? Or maybe bad thermal pasting?

i don't leave it on all the time and abuse it i just scared of my cpu melting or something lol
 
Cool, how are the temps now? Even when its being hammered 100% you dont want the processor getting to 80c.
i not try'd prime 95 again sense it went past 12h mark at 80c no fails when im playing bf3 the highest temp i get on that is 64 but its usually around the 50s area
 
I think theres always a risk of damage when overclocking but as long as you dont push the voltage to silly levels then it should just crash before damage sets in.
