About to place an order to replace my ageing Phenom 9950 machine.

Looking at new components:

3770K (3570K would do as I mostly game but sometimes I work from home on CAD so thought the extra threads and cache would help - or am I wasting my money?)

Asus P8Z77-V LX - cheap Z77 MB I know but it does everything I need it to unless anyone can offer me better for similar money (can't afford sabertooth!)

Crucial Ballistix Elite 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C8 1600MHz Dual Channel Kit (BLE2CP4G3D1608DE1TX0CEU) x 2 for 16GB

Existing components:

EVGA 660ti SC 3GB (very bottlenecked by current cpu)
OCZ 120GB SSD
Hitachi 500GB HD
Corsair HX750
D-Tek Fuzion V2 CPU Water Block (plan to OC the Ivy bridge a little but will need to drill out the bracket holes to suit 1155)

Just looking for words of wisdom re the MB and cpu really thanks guys and gals (rare):)

replies already thanks guys.

2 recommendations for the gigabyte board :)

I'd looked at that Avexir memory but the 8-8-8-24 Timings of the Ballistix swung me, good point about the option to go to 32GB at a later date but software seems to be a way off using all that...

What's your budget?

as little as poss or the wife will kill me!

Initially with 3570k and 8GB of ram I was just over £300 but that's creeping up now to more like £450

lol - I know that feeling

This should be fine:

YOUR BASKET
1 x Intel Core i5-3570K 3.40GHz (Ivybridge) Socket LGA1155 Processor (77W) - Retail £179.99
1 x Gigabyte Z77-D3H Intel Z77 (Socket 1155) DDR3 Motherboard £83.99

You can then upgrade with another 8gb's later if needed.

Choice of coolers if you are looking to overclock:

to be honest, it's going to seem like warp speed compared to my current rig so I'm going to go cheap with the i5 and maybe trade up in a year or so when Haswell drives down the prices.

Could then look at getting a 16gb set and add it to your 8gb too! You'd have free shipping by then as well.

My advice is get in contact with Autodesk and ask the specifics of their multi core support. Sometimes programs say they are multi-threaded but often are not fully multi-thread. They may only be able to spread across 2 or 3 cores max. Ive had that situation with some audio production software.
In that case it might be a waste going for the i7. Most of the time my i7 is sitting there doing nothing. Its a pity that more software isnt truely multi-thread.
