Looking for good ideas for a 100 mile round trip commute.

95% motorway miles so looking for a comfortable diesel. Budget lowish, £3,000-£6,000 depending on expected life of the car but obviously looking for economy.

I've got Mondeo in mind just because I've heard it's good to abuse, but really looking for something with a suitable thrifty engine that's fairly bullet proof.

Got any ideas where to start? I really like my 118d but can't afford to ram the miles on it!

Edit: been offered a 1.4 diesel Yaris based on ecomony but not sure how enjoyable a 50 minute commute at 70 will be in a wee Yaris.

I suppose I deserved that! We need 2 cars so keeping the 118d just thinking dumping 24k on it a year will run it into the ground. Being a 56 it's not the newer engine, what lifespan can I realistically expect from it?

If its a 56 its already, what, 7 years old this year. It's not as if it has high value. You may as well get maximum value for money out of the car you already own and run it into the ground.

Then you can buy something that doesnt need to be a diesel as your second car.

I'm incredibly confused - you already have what is probably the perfect car?

Keep it for 2 or 3 years then move it on before the mileage frightens people off. Its not like there's a shortage of 100k+ miles 1 series diesels

Well no, he doesn't, on a list of motorway munchers a 118d would be far from the top with its cramped cabin, poor ride quality and lack of refinement, however it's sufficiently capable that it's disadvantages are outweighed by the benefits of being able to use a car you already own.

You know fine well what I was getting at. The 1 diesel is reasonable enough on a journey to make it pointless changing unless the op actually needs more room
