Really confused now :( HTC One or Samsung Galaxy S4

I have just checked and I may be confused - I have been reading so much on these two phones over the last couple of days, I can't remember what I read where !

It appears that there was an issues with the HTC One X losing touch sensitivity. Looks like the new HTC One may be OK - why didn't HTC come up with a different name, makes it so hard to search !!

I think if you use the model name M7 in your searches a lot of people are using this to try and stand out from the old models. Did a search for HTC ONE M7 on Amazon to find my current case

For me I can't commit to either.

To many things missing from both, be it samsung and design and my current samsung bad experience or htc without sd and battery fixed

If I had to choose between them I'd have the HTC easily. Galaxy is too big and looks cheap/bland/boring. Not bothered about air gestures either.

The S4 and HTC One are the same size (well, the One is 1mm taller and thicker and the S4 is 1mm wider).

I'd get the S4, for me the One just doesn't offer anything to make it as good as an S4. The only 2 areas it might be better than the S4 is sound from external speakers which I don't care about (which also make the phone look horrible) and camera, which again I don't care enough about to consider it an advantage over the S4's camera.

For me everything else is worse; AMOLED, SD Card, lighter, faster, root without breaking warrenty, looks, software features (if they make air view work like mouseovers in browser :p), bigger screen, probably more I can't think of :o.

Fair enough to all those reasons you mentioned there.

but performance isn't that different, if any different (outside of benchmarks) to be worth worrying about even for a second.

Also, don't forget the GS 4 CPU is overclocked, the HTC CPU chipset isn't and more importantly, the one is running 4.1.2 where as the GS 4 is running 4.2.2 (which iirc brings performance improvements [at least in benchmarks anyway]) so the HTC one with the same overclock and same android version could very well match and possibly even beat the GS 4 overall.

And for what it is worth, the HTC one is being reported as the fastest/smoothest android phone in real world usage to date by many reviewers and end users (who have had GS 3, note II, one S, X etc.), although as I said, imo it isn't worth worrying about since those phones are already fast.

To be honest, I get the feeling if you got either phone you won't be disappointed. Two very excellent Android phones.

Yeah, performance isn't really an issue for either tbh.

The One is only on 4.1.2?. I didn't realise that, not that I care about anything they added in 4.2 anyway :p.

Oh, and although I made it obvious which I'd pick, I still agree with xibinim that either are unlikely to disappoint :). Although sAMOLED is awesome ;).

Yeah supposedly HTC didn't go with 4.2 due to all the problems and battery drain (4.2.2 [which contains many improvements/fixes] was released a few days before the one) as well as causing delays so they stuck with something stable. Supposedly 4.2.2 and sense V5 is coming to the X and S in June so I imagine the one will get 4.2.2 pretty soon. Likewise, 4.2 is a very pointless update imo, you could just install all the new things from the market :p

Yup, SAMOLED FTW every time! :D

Most opf the reviews puyt the HTC as haviong the sharper more realistic colour based screen however over contrast bright in your face AMOLED for some reason is preferred by many, maybe because contrast is seen as being better by those who dont care about correct colour reproduction.

As for build quality, the HTC is far better too...

Camera on the HTC lets it down, it has less features (although you can download apps to bridge this gap) and you cant expand the storage.

I have just benched my phone and I get 24750ish on Antutu which from what I can see is the same as the S4 making any choice down to cosmetics and software rather than hardware.

I went with the HTC as the S3 for me was sub standard build quality and the S4 appears top be no different.

It all comes down to preference regarding the screen type.

LCD generally has more natural colours/better calibrated, better whites, way brighter, poor blacks (supposedly the one is pretty good here, for a LCD screen anyway) where as SAMOLED has more saturated colours, lower brightness and worse whites, much better blacks i.e. true blacks, however, with the GS 4, you can choose different presets and iirc there is an adobe RGB preset, which means you can have the SAMOLED screen with natural colours (reviews have said it is calibrated extremely well and even beating some of the best LCD panels), also supposedly the whites are much better too. The main downside of the GS 4 screen is the brightness but it should be bright enough for most conditions....

I personally don't think sharpness is going to be an issue on either, both have a stupid high ppi level, unless you have perfect eye vision, you will be hard pressed to notice the difference. Although it goes without saying that the one will have the sharper display :p

I certainly would be happy with the one display where as I could not live with the xperia Z display, but would prefer to have SAMOLED for the saturated colours and true blacks, everything just "pops out" more and looks more "pleasing" imo.

Less features? I would say the HTC one edges the GS 4 when it comes to camera features overall and then not to mention all the stuff you can do with zoe.

I prefer "AMOLED colours", but it can still be calibrated to "proper" colours. Perseus kernel for the S3/Note2 puts the colours equal/better than the iPad3 (measured by professional calibration stuff) and the S4 will come with a preset for realistic colours (and if that isn't accurate enough I'm sure AndreiLux will sort that out :p).

I still have my N2 set to dynamic rather than the calibrated one even though I use Perseus kernel though :p.

Although I really like the design and build quality of the HTC One, I think I will go for the plasticky feel and rich feature set of the Sammy.

As I am moving from an iPhone, I don't want the same restriction on memory and battery as I have now. Also, Zoe worries me in that I already have trouble managing my photos on my iPhone let alone numerous copies that it seems Zoe generates

If you like to install apps etc. then you can get a lot of the stuff from touchwiz via apps and am sure that a lot of the new stuff i.e. smart pause will be ported across as apps or implemented in already excellent apps such as BS player (or probably already are on the market somewhere i.e. "smart stay" was actually on the market long before Samsung introduced it on the GS 3 when released)

The main one that I like is the multi-view, there are apps that perform similar things for this feature too i.e. "floating browser" and pop out video window via BS player but the apps themselves wouldn't be as good as the dedicated apps.
