Tokyo

No, there have been quite a few threads on this subject over the years ... just seaching GD for Tokyo and going through the pages of results returns a few :)

But ...

Sky Tree (go early) and it's complex.
Tokyo Tower
There's a viewing area high up in the Metropolitan Government building in Shinjuku

If you like looking at building then the renovated west side of Tokyo Station looks quite nice (and was popular with lots of Japanese people looking and taking pictures when I was last there). Take the Marunouchi North exit and look up on the way through the lobby area.

Meiji shrine is a nice restful place to visit and is right by Harajuku station so can be combined with visiting that area.

You're a bit early for cherry blossom I expect but if not then the national gardens at Shinjuku and the park at Ueno are both nice (although can get busy if there is blossom). Also at Ueno you have the Nature and Science Museum which is good and several other museums and galleries.

The Asakusa area is worth a look around as well.

If you think you might want to use Starbucks free wifi whilst out there you need to sign up in advance (see here). I miss Matcha Frappacinos.

Shopping in Shibuya, Akihabara, Nakano Broadway, Odiaba depending on what you want.

If you want to go to the Ghibli Museum then you really need to look into how to do that before you go.

So I got back yesterday.

What an awesome experience. I genuinely can say that I would like to experience living there. I loved it.

When I get some time I will try and string together some of the pics that we took between our group along with a mini blog of what we did/where we went whilst over there.

I thoroughly recommend getting over there if you haven't been before :)

I want to know more about the food, tell us about the food !!!

and did you go to the parks and see all those groups of kids in the latest "fashion"?

I'll do a proper mini type up when I get chance. The food was awesome, so awesome I've put on weight, and that doesn't happen very easily!

Nice timing for this thread. Im going in 2 and a half weeks for 5 days as part of my trip. I cant wait, always wanted to go since Ive been a kid. Now Im finally getting a chance.

im due to go back 2015 IF i can get work sorted as it should be a 4-5 week break so i can have a few days in kyoto and get out of tokyo a bit more.

If you are going to Kyoto I would also consider visiting Osaka as it's only 10-15mins by train.

Personally we're already starting to look where we want to go for next year. There will be plenty of time in Tokyo of course but at the moment looking at going to Kyoto/Osaka and on down to Kyushu (probably stopping off in Hiroshima for okonomiyaki). My Dad wants to go to Sapporo too so it's looking at the logistical aspects of doing things.

Have to start saving for spending money too ...

yeah, well its all up in the air until i find some work and get money saved up so got some time to plan it all. but will be looking at renting a place in tokyo rather than a hotel maybe depending on costs.

but kyoto will be a must an im sure a few other places will be added to the list. does help having mates out there as they can act as travel agents for me to get some nice deals sorted as well as places to visit :D

Most of the time I've found them exceedingly polite and helpful even if there is the issue of communication. But like anywhere it does depend on how you are treating them as well ... I tend to find friendly bafflement works quite well ... :)

Just out of interest, those who have been recently did you do it in 1 stop or direct?

Im ask as im currently costing Tokyo out but 1 stop is half the price of direct flights.

guess it depends where your flying from and with who. i go from manchester and generaly fly via copenhagen with scandanavien air. costs more but i detest heathrow, done it once and never again.
