It'll soon be time to start looking at replacements for my RX-8. Thing is, I can't think of anything to replace it with...

Did briefly consider a new BRZ/GT86, but after driving it, the engine seriously lets it down. The rest of the car is excellent, but the engine is just sounds dull and has no get up and go.

Both me and the other half have a list of requirements, some of hers come from the list of cars I was initially looking at. She wants such things as a windscreen and a roof... Picky picky picky. :D

My requirements:
Rear wheel drive
Manual gearbox
Petrol engine
FUN at 'normal' back road speeds.
Around the same size as the RX-8 - this is due to where I have to park. it's all concrete pillars and it can be a bit tight when all the parking spaces are full.

Her requirements:
Roof, windscreen, doors and windows *see what I mean...*
2+2 or 4 seater
Heated seats would be nice.
Decent sized boot.
Prefer something newer than the '8 *the '8 is an 05 plate*

I do under 3000 miles a year, so something that makes me smile when I drive it is pretty important. The RX-8 does this with ease. No preferences on manufacturer, body style, engine configuration. Prices around £15k would be good.

So, what do you think I should take a look at?

All that comes to mind is an E92 330i like this: http://www.pistonheads.com/classifi...s-330i-m-sport-2008--stunning-reduced/1195290

Very slightly longer, no heated seats on that one but they will exist more so on a convertible I'm sure. Subjectivly to me an equivilant Merc would be less 'fun' on a back road. And there's a Quattro A4/A5. But if you're changing drivetrain then there's also something like a Cooper S works:

Rear wheel drive - check
Manual gearbox - check
Petrol engine - check

2+2 or 4 seater - check
Heated seats would be nice. - check
Decent sized boot. - check
Prefer something newer than the '8 *the '8 is an 05 plate* - check

It even has parking sensors for your tight spaces, though doesn't appear to have xenons.

Or a slightly newer but a 125i, with xenons and heated seats.

370z are good fun.

Fits my requirements, but not the other half's. Plus, drove the 350Z back when I was looking and ended up buying the '8 and didn't really get on with it. But it did have a bright orange interior...

BMW 135i Coupe?

Possibly. Will have to have a closer look at them, not really considered them before.

Think I'd be more tempted by the normal saloon rather than the convertible. Me in summer with hayfever with a convertible may not be the best idea. ;)

Mini? Can't get comfortable in them. Gave a friend a lift to the airport in their Cooper S a while back and I got back ache after 30 minutes.

Why do you want to replace your RX-8?

Maybe it's time to replace the engine? :p

Ha... ha... ha...

I've owned it for coming up to 5 years now and it's done 76000 miles, and it still starts perfectly when hot. I admit, I've done the coil packs, ht leads and the spark plugs, but I didn't know when they'd been done before that. Only other thing that I've had to do iirc is the front drop links.

I'm just starting to feel that it's time to change. If I could, I'd keep the RX-8 as a second car, but only one parking space in the building. :( It's not as if they're worth anything to trade in really. Would probably get more for it if I broke it for parts, which would be a hell of a shame, but it's not in the best condition cosmetically due to people opening doors into it and scratches from peoples bags and things like that.

I miss read the roof requirement amd thought you wanted a vert; how bizarre, I thought it was a rather odd choice, never mind :D

I don't mind convertibles, they've just started planting a lot more rape around here, which is the one thing guaranteed to set my hayfever off.

A couple of the cars I drove before I got the '8 didn't have a roof or a windscreen. I loved them. She wasn't so enthused about having to wear a crash helmet the day after having her hair done for a wedding. :D
