New car - Jaaaagggg XJ6

Have you had any reliability problems to do with the LPG?

yes I had a vaporisor fail which cost £75 for the best unit they had in stock with a much higher power rating. it was a realitivly easy diy job. imo lpg is quite straigh forward and if you stay away from budget kits you shouldnt experience many issues.

the reliabilty on the jag is another story, mine has just failed it MOT needing a bit of welding and a couple of tyres. last month was the belt tensioner and idler pulley. the consumables add up too as I try and service it every 7-10k so a couple of times a year, which I think is important on cars like these. all worth it in the end as it is a fabulous place to sit and churn over the miles.

Very impressive purchase. The £1000 insurance excess is a bit scary, but if you're 18, living with parents and with few outgoings why not indulge yourself.

Good work fella!

255/35/20 Sportcontact 3's, wouldnt want the bill for replacing those

I had to look.

For the Sportcontact 2's, £250 a corner fitted..

I'd seriously need a tyre fund going to afford replacing those.

immense dude, just immense.

great pics too!

Thanks, pictures were taken by Voxination, my phone camera combined with lack of photography skills wouldn't have done it justice.

That was how I justified it to myself :) although I don't live with my parents thank god!

Yeah, they're not cheap at all. The wheels are beautiful enough for me to justify it though, they're probably my favourite aspect of the car. Once I've got properly used to the car I'll get them refurbed into mint condition, don't want to do it now as I'm likely to curb them and that would be rather gutting if they were mint.

Eh? OP says they are Dunlops :p

Also, 20" tyres are as cheap, if not cheaper than 19"s (being far less popular). There was a case recently where it was cheaper to buy 4 replica 20" alloys with tyres than it was to buy 4 x new 19" tyres :D

Those front tyres are from 2007 too :p

I was mistaken in the OP - there are 3 dunlops and 1 continental. When I was looking at buying an alfa 159 with 19" wheels I seem to remember the tyres being similarly priced, but either way they're not cheap!

Hi mate, could you drop me an email. I said I would be in contact after the RR but you don't have an email address in your profile or trust. Cheers.

Very nice motor, regardless of your age.

Insurance prices, well, as you pointed out it sort of doesn't matter what you drive at that age, you get reamed anyway...but £1K voluntary excess? Eeeek....don't bend it!

That is lovely! Being 17 myself I am envious. Can't wait till I can change to something quicker from my 1.2, it shall have to wait a while though.

Sorry, only just saw this! Just dropped you a trust message :)

How are you getting on with the car?

Well you did ask, so here's all my thoughts about it (sorry for the essay!) tl;dr version is I like it :p

It drives just as smoothly and quietly as you would expect, to the extent where I often wonder if the engine is on at all when I’m sitting in traffic. Performance-wise, it’s better than I expected – on the test drive it felt a little sluggish but now I’ve got used to the autobox it really puts a smile on my face. That said, the power band is a bit strange: somewhat surprisingly, when in sport mode it’s quite quick off the line and equally, when accelerating from 70MPH to “more than 70MPH” it really picks up, which is especially useful on the motorway.
However, between say 40MPH and 60MPH it isn’t quite as good – not slow by any means, but not noticeably quicker than my mazda, which can make overtaking several vehicles at once a bit of a challenge.

As I said before, I tend to drive it fairly slowly as it’s not the kind of car you take for a hoon. That said, I’ve had several opportunities to turn off the traction control and push it, and it’s surprisingly rewarding. You’d still know it’s a big car, but it turns in and holds the road a lot better than I expected. With the electronic aids turned on, it has a tendency to understeer rather than oversteer, but with the DSC off, it’s fairly easy to induce and control oversteer.

The size of the car however means I’ve not summoned up the courage to have any proper tail-out moments, in general I’ve just let the back step out a small amount and then controlled it with opposite lock. If I manage to find a wet carpark next time it rains I will report back with my findings. :p

Comfort-wise it’s almost faultless, it soaks up the bumps really well and remains perfectly stable on roads where other cars would be jumping around all over the place. That said, it doesn't seem to handle speedbumps very well, it feels as it hasn't been expecting it and the whole car really lurches over them. A friend said that this may be simply because the general smoothness of the car makes me think I’m travelling slower than I actually am, which could well be true, so I’m still not entirely sure about that one

I’ve actually been using the Jag quite a lot for work and commuting to uni, as my Mazda is currently at my parents’ house around 70 miles from my flat, and I haven’t been bothered to come back and get it. I was slightly apprehensive at doing this, as I have to park in a lot of very tight spaces, and the Jag is rather huge. Surprisingly however, the parking sensors combined with decent visibility means it isn’t as difficult to park as I thought – certainly a lot easier than my Volvo! Somewhat annoyingly though, the alloys are incredibly easy to curb – the rim protector on the tyres seems to do nothing at all, and if you so much as touch a curb you’re greeted with a lovely scratch. Current plan is to drive it for a few more months, then once I’m confident I won’t curb them any more, get the whole set refurbed.

Fuel economy wise, I’m averaging 23MPG, and that’s mostly short trips and town driving, so not too bad really. The engine does seem to take a long while to reach peak efficiency which seriously affects the economy. I’ve done a few long trips with it and it happily averages 30MPG, but if you purely do short journeys this is definitely not the car for you!

Finally, I should probably mention people’s reactions to it, which are rather mixed. Sadly, it does seem to attract a bit of jealousy – I get let out of junctions far less often in this than in my other cars, and the occasional weirdo does try to go out of their way to wind me up –just this morning a van in front of me slowed to 15MPH and tried to block me when I attempted to pass him. I’m also rather paranoid that people will open their doors into it / key it as it’s happened to several people at my uni who drive similar cars. I try to park away from everyone else whenever possible, but I know that it will probably happen eventually and when it does I’ll be absolutely gutted.

Otherwise, people seem to really like it – my friends all want lifts in it, and it gets a lot of positive comments in pub carparks, petrol stations and suchlike. Perhaps the most amusing one was a guy I let through who slowed down, stared at me in shock and mouthed “what the ****??”

So, to sum it all up, I’m really happy with it and frankly still can’t quite believe it’s mine. I’m always incredibly critical about cars so I’m bound to find a few little things I dislike, but overall this is definitely my best purchase, and one I can see myself keeping for a long time.

Once again, thanks for all the comments :)

but with the DSC off

Well, it's now been 5 months and 10,000 miles since I bought the Jag, and having just come back from the south of france in it I thought I'd do another little update.

I guess I'll start with the good news: nothing major has gone wrong and the running costs haven't bankrupted me - who says you need a diesel if you do over 20k a year! :p

Before setting off for france, I got some new brake pads fitted (bought for £28 and fitted for free) and had it serviced at a local Jag specialist.

Overall, it was given a clean bill of health, but the garage picked up on some rear suspension bushes and joints that could do with replacing. After listening to their standard sharp intakes of breath and "that only comes as a complete unit direct from Jaguar sir", I decided to order the parts myself as, surprise surprise, they were available for less than 10% of the quoted bill, and my mechanic friend will fit them for £40 next time I see him.

After the service, I took it down to the south of france with some friends from uni, doing a total of nearly 1900 miles in one week.

Driving in France was just as good as expected: the lane discipline is brilliant, as are the road surfaces, especially on the toll roads. The small, grey speed cameras do put a bit of a dampener on things however, and I suspect I'll be getting a few presents in the post from the gendarmes in the coming weeks :p

Despite being weighed down with 5 (and, on some occasions, 6) people plus luggage, the Jag never missed a beat. Our villa was located at the end of a 2 mile dirt track which proved rather challenging: the first time I attempted it I genuinely thought it wasn't going to be able to make it to the top as the car spent more time sideways than straight. After a few trips I managed to find the right balance and by the end of the week it had dried up quite a lot anyway which made things much easier.

That's pretty much it really - I'll just finish off with a few Jag related holiday photos. :)

Nice - glad to hear the big cat looked after y'all
Quite fancy a spin down through France myself, actually, now!

Looks fantastic :) nice one!

Out of interest, will getting caught speeding in France be just a fine or can they give points for speeding offences abroad too?
