Hi everyone,

I've recently bought an XFX 550 and built a prodigy gaming pc. I have lots, of unused cables which take up lots of room. I plan to leave the system as is, and if I ever upgrade, ill be upgrading the PSU as well.

Is it OK to cut those I dont need, and then cover the exposed wires?

Has anyone had experience with this?

I don't see any point really, could cause a whole host of problems really, cant you route all the cables to the back side of the case tie them together and leave them there?

I would not cut any wire your not 100 percent sure of the dangers aside of fire and short circuiting if you find you need them later you wont be happy.

yes you can cut them, what i have done with mine, is cut the wires i dont use, then crimped atx pins back onto the wires, then put the original connector back on, so if i do need the wires in future, i can just make some extensions and all is good!

I like that idea! I'll have to get some wire crimps and atx pins. Thank you

I'll look into it!

the crimping tool is expensive, but i have used mine a lot so its paid for itself i guess....

this is one of the ones i did...

and ended up like this:

i then tucked them inside the PSU case, so that they cant be seen (out of the way of anything else in there)

If you do just make sure everything is covered and nothing touching any other wires/metal. The best thing to do as said is to add the connectors back to be safe. Can never be too safe with electricity...

Apart from the fact that you will not have any warranty by cutting the wires, putting the wires inside the psu is a extremely bad idea as it will obstruct the airflow through the unit.

Hmm OK. Anyone in London happy to lend me a crimp tool? I won't really be doing this after this one time, so paying almost £30 isn't really good haha.

If not, thank you anyway.

Nah, £26 or so, the tool you require is HT-225D. This will produce a superb crimp.

Yeah just checked what I paid, with delivery 32 quid....

They do an 'alright' job tbh... Not as good as the more expensive ones mind., I used a 70 quid tool before I realised buying one for myself would be beneficial and it was fantastic.

He uses his for his job though, where as I use it for a hobby, so I can't justify the money.

I'm not sure where you get the idea from that it's an 'extremely bad idea' ...

The connectors are only marginly bigger than the wires that were there, it's fine.

It does however void the warranty, but I'm not fussed about that in the slightest
