According to Engadget Sony announced 2 new monitors today, apparently May will see the release of 1 of the models. I so hope this is true, it feels like i've been waiting my whole life for OLED, Linky below

Guys an update on this 30" 4k OLED, linky below:

SONY 4K OLED

The 30" panel is produced the same Japanese fab that produces Sony's current OLED panels (the 7.4", 16.5" and 24.5" panels used in Sony's professional monitors). This explains why the resolution of the 30" panel (4096x2160) is different than the 56" one (3840x2160) as the Oxide-TFT backplane of the 56" panel is made by AUO, not Sony. Both panels however use Sony's Super Top Emission technology.

Our source at Sony confirms that they plan to launch the first 30" 4K OLED monitor next year - in fact they plan to do so by April 2014.

Regarding those enhanced 16.5" and 24.5" OLEDs for the "A" Series monitors, our source says that the improvements were achieved by a new architecture - Sony redesigned the pixel construction and this enabled a major improvement in viewing angles and a greatly reduced color shift.[/QUOTE

Exciting stuff. Very expensive 'pro level' stuff, but it will whittle its way down to the home consumer in time. :) I've added a little bit about this on this on-going OLED monitors article of mine. I've also tried to contact Sony to see if they have any plans to enter the consumer-level market again. They were big names in the household and office back in the CRT days and it would be nice to see them back there again.

+1 they were kings of the performance CRTs. I miss those days. Bring on affordable 4k!

Back then Sony didn't have LG & Samsung to contend with, to an extent it seems the Koreans are dominating the TV market these days which leaves Sony having to work with other Japanese companies such as Panasonic. Which isn't necessarily a bad thing, Sony and Pan have some great engineers so working together can only be a good thing. Also didn't Sony start the OLED revolution back in 2003/2004...So one would think they have the advantage over the Koreans but the Koreans have the money to invest in OLED more then the Japanese who are struggling these days, maybe if they join up with the Chinese TV manufacturers it could also help push things forward. I've always been a Sony boy, so i hope they can come out and beat the hell out of the Koreans in the OLED market, looking unlikely though.

Actually talking of 4k i came across a fantastic article on 4K (Ultra HD) today, it explains in depth what 4K is capable of and what the industry needs to do before we can actually experience 4K in all its glory. I never realised how much the film industry and others are lagging behind, i always thought they were way ahead of the game with the filming equipment they used. I suggest anyone interested in 4K gives this read it gives us a great insight on the potential of 4k, linky below:

Let me know what you think guys.

Good article. However, I would point out that we need not necessarily be limited to HDMI for the bandwidths needed for 4k at higher refresh rates. DP is license-free and way more powerful. If we do need to stick to HDMI, the good news is that HDMI 2.0 is supposedly being rolled out VERY soon, and supports higher bandwidths than 1.4b. Not sure if 4k at 120Hz is something we'll see anytime soon (drool) but we will get there eventually.

I fully agree with the author that the Blu-ray association needs to get its act together and develop solutions for the HIGHER end of 4k's capabilities. Otherwise they will lose out to online content or some other physical medium.

On another topic, I was pretty gutted to hear that the rumours about PS4 supported 4K were false. Not because I expected many games coming out with content above 1080p, but rather because this would probably have helped speed up the wider industry's overall uptake of 4K.

In any case, what I'm really interested in seeing are affordable 4K computer monitors, ideally ones that support refresh rates above 60Hz. With enough GPU power, we can already drive such resolutions in games via DirectX. It's just a question of affording a display that accepts the resolution...

The amount of graphics power needed to run a game at 4K is just unthinkable at the moment so while they are nice, I shall pass.

Considering we can barely do Full HD at the moment makes them a bit pointless unless you need it for your profession.

So 3-4 years before they're affordable enough that I don't need to flog any body parts on the black market?
