I received a phone call from my car insurance company yesterday. Someone has been in contact with them and they are claiming my car was involved in a multiple car crash late last month.

The only details my insurance company have at the moment is the date of the alleged accident and the name of the road.

To start with my car hasn't been involved in an accident and after using google maps I can't see a road anywhere near me with the name they gave. I explained that it wasn't me and they would pass it to their disputes team.

Has anyone had anything similar happen? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Ask them how they got your details, when they say 'looked it up from numberplate', tell them to bugger off as if you were at the roadside then you would have swapped details. Also the police would have been involved in a 'multiple car crash' so they would have all the reg's etc.

Or maybe cloned plates  ;).

This happened to me a year or so ago. Got a call from Admiral about being involved in an accident somewhere miles away. I just said i have no idea what they are talking about and that it must be a mistake ( like someone has taken down a number plate or name wrong).

I think they called once more to confirm i had no idea what they were talking about and that was it. Never heard any more about it.

Just in case it goes further, can you find more proof you weren't there? Shopping receipt etc?

Why does he need to do that? If he hasn't swapped details and the police haven't charged him with failing to stop / report, then he has no further obligation to prove anything.

The same thing happened to me last July.

I had to prove my innocense to my insurance company, who were not helpful at all. All I was told was the date and where the accident happened. I proved to them that I was in the office And the car was in the car park. They would not give me any info about the third party.

They agreed to send a mechanic to inspect my vehicle.

The vehicle specialist came about 3 weeks later and inspected the car without me being there. First thing he did was fone me and said what is he looking for. I explained about the bogus accident. A few days later I get the report which suggested my car had been in a slight accident and the repaire bill would be like 400 pounds.

What a joke.

I later found out that it was the third parties passenger who was claiming for whiplash. I said what about the drivers vehicle repair And whiplash for them. My insurance company said its just the passenger claiming.

At the end the claim was dropped by the third parties insurance company, as they didn't respond to my questions. But the case stayed on my file for 9 months, In case they went to another insurance company and reignited the claim.

I wrote an official complaint to my insurance company over tis incident.

Typed this from my iPhone. Not easy

See the post above from NSX - a bit of effort now might save agro in the future.

On Another note, I said this is a bogus and fraudulent claim. What are u lot doing to investigate it and shall I report it to the police?

I was advised that they have their own departments that deal with these matters.

For proof that I was in the office. I provided a copy of my signing in and out sheet And proof that I was in a meeting when the so called accident took place.

Thank you for all the replies, I am getting in touch with everyone I was with/places I was at to try and get signed statements and CCTV footage. I also used my debit card quite a bit that day so trying to find the receipts/contact my bank to get a statement sent through.
