New to PC gaming

You want recommendations from the entire 25+ years of PC gaming?

Would probably suggest Doom, Baldur's Gate, Sim City 2000, Planescape: Torment, Civilisation IV, Grim Fandango, Deus Ex, Diablo 2, Half Life (all of them), Portal, Starcraft 2, XCOM, System Shock 2, Morrowind, Star Wars KotOR, Quake 3...

No, he didn't ask anything of the sort

" Last time I was a PC Gamer I spent 4+hours a day on CS:S o and I remember F.E.A.R had just came out! Offt. So what have I missed out on? "

As you can see, he was a PC up until around 5-6 years ago (judging by Fear just coming out".

Anyway Mate, welcome back! you say budget rig but that's a nice spec for getting back into it! :D

I recommend Skyrim, StarCraft 2, Dawn of war 2, Bioshock infinite, Crysis as a few random examples. Steam sales are amazing these days so you will be able to get quite a collection come the summer sale.

EVE. Like a challenge? Like backstabbing? like peoples tears?

Add to that "like having no life outside your PC?".

On a different note, I can't believe people are recommending him games that are either terribly mainstream (and boring, for that matter) or simply available on consoles (which would be nothing new to the OP).

If you want to know what you've been missing out on, try some genres that are almost exclusively PC-orientated:

  • Old-school RPGs, D&D style (Baldur's Gate 2, Planescape Torment, NWN2: Mask of the Betrayer)
  • Space sims (X-series, Wing Commander, Freelancer)
  • Simulators (Flight Simulator X, iRacing, Euro Truck Simulator 2, Silent Hunter III)
  • Real-Time Strategies (Company of Heroes, Starcraft, Age of Empires 2)
  • Turn-based Strategies (Heroes of M&M, Age of Wonders, King's Bounty, Combat Mission)
  • Turn-based Tactics (Men of War, Silent Storm, Fallout: Tactics, Commandos 2)
  • Grand Strategies (Europa Universalis, Hearts of Iron)
  • Stealth TPPs (Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory, Thief)
  • Survival games (STALKER, Amnesia, System Shock 2)
  • 4X (Civilization 4, Master of Orion, Galactic Cilvilizations)
  • Tycoons (Rollercoaster Tycoon 2, Theme Hospital, Transport Tycoon/Open TTD)
  • Hybrid strategy (Total War games)
  • Sandbox (Mount & Blade: Warband, Sid Meiers' Pirates!, Sea Dogs)
  • God games (Black & White, Populous)
  • City builders (SimCity 4, Tropico 4, Anno 1404/2070, The Settlers 4, Stronghold: Crusaders, Ceasar)
  • MMO FPS (Planetside 2)
  • MMORPGs (WoW, Guild Wars 2, Everquest)
  • Casual sims (The Sims)
  • Competitive (DOTA 2, Counter Strike)
  • Adventure (Monkey Island, Broken Sword, Grim Fandango, The Walking Dead)

Check out the list of all-time best selling PC games to see what was rocking over the years (although half of the titles are rocking on popularity rather than quality), but don't forget that PC has a lot of other exclusives that are consistently being released by different teams.

I highly recommend going to GOG and their forums, they seem to have a lot more PC-orientated gamers who have played the majority of classic PC games from the Golden Age of PC gaming. All of their games are DRM-free and cheap as chips.

Your name looks familiar. Did you by any chance use to frequent the Teeside CSS servers many years ago? I was an avid CSS player back then and I remember there was a guy called Begbie, he made some snow map that was run on the server. I remember there was an argument too with the server admin too and the map got removed.

Just got one of these and they are awesome. Works so well with my G500, previously had a Steelseries cloth pad which was just as good. It just got old and I wanted to treat myself.

Games
I don't think you can top Bioshock Infinite at the moment. It's probably my favorite game of all so I'd make this a priority. It looks absolutely stunning on my PC.

Thinking older titles I'd highly recommend the following games
Portal 1 and 2
Skyrim
Mafia 2 (especially if you played Mafia)
Deus Ex Human Revolution
Sleeping Dogs
Fallout 3 (which may lead you to New Vegas)

the list is endless really but those above spring to mind.

Edited my post for further clarification and added a number of examples everyone new to PC gaming should check out. I'll add more to that list if anything comes to my tired mind later.

Another thing that springs to my mind is that I've probably spent as much time playing various PC games modifications as I have playing vanilla games. I think it's one of the strongest areas of PC gaming and I hugely advise you to check out some Source, Warband and Total War mods. Also, the Indies.

WOW PC gaming is a friendly place! :)

Cheers guys, will have a look over that lot.

O and already started Portal and Portal 2 on xbox mind :)

Thanks Mr Grugga, that's some list! *crosses fingers for some rainy days.

Mr Krugga's list is a great start...however, I can't believe he didn't include World of Tanks somewhere!!! (unless he did and I didn't see it)

:p

Free-to-play multiplayer game with a fair bit of depth. Lots of players and a good ocuk playerbase as well. Nice game for someone starting out in OC gaming imo.

I had WoT in mind, but I forgot about it in the end. There were too many genres and way too many interesting games to list and keep track off, so I just included the ones off the top of my head and went to sleep. :p

I'll add a few more, including World of Tanks, later on. Isn't World of Planes coming out soon too?

On that note, hate it or love it, but games like Minecraft or Terraria should definitely be on that list too.

And true combat simulators like ARMA 2/3, Red Orchestra 2 or Battlefield 2. And possibly some casual shooters like Painkiller, Team Fortress 2 or Serious Sam.

And Action RPGs, such as Torchlight II, Diablo 2 and Path of Exile...

Yup, definitely a few more to add.

Remind me to put KOTOR, The Witcher, Red Alert, Homeworld, Quake 3, Warcraft 3, The Longest Journey and Deus Ex on that list.
