I have my driving test today!

Well done on passing. :)

My first car (at 18) was a £250.00 1.4L Orion with a manual choke that my parents bought me for my 18th, pretty sweet.

My first car was a 1.1 rover 100 (Metro) bought it for £300

I loved it! most comfy car ever with its hydrogas suspension.

Now drive a 59 plate Fiat Panda 1.1 £500 per year on insurance, £30 road tax and 50+mpg bought it new on scrappage scheme

Old people cars tbh but I like them and I'm 23 in May

Something cheap will cost 2x on insurance. Insurance is dead money, as you dont get anything back at the end of the cars life.

Depreciation is dead money too, older cars don't depreciate so much.

You want to get money back at the end of it's life, how much will a 5-7 year old Polo be worth complete with learner driver scrapes?

Your quotes once you have a year or two NCD should reduce dramatically, if you prang a low value vehicle you will feel less inclined to claim therefore potentially building your NCD quicker (and keeping claims off your record), if you have to claim your insurance will potentially sting for the following 3 years.

That's what I said! Only mine was more stupider.

Heh - welcome to freedom ;)

I remember the first day of passing my test - getting to drive my mums 1.4 306 :) Was a pretty decent car back then :) Albeit with the slightly underpowered engine choice!

As above, you will probably make the odd mistake in the first few months of driving and it is far cheaper to-do this in a banger and then get something you really want. Also your insurance will plummet from now on! My insurance pretty much halved each year of driving so I was better off running cheapo cars for the first few years until I could buy something I actually wanted to drive!

Are you dead set on getting the Polo or can it be other cars as long as you can get insurance for under £2,000?

If it is the latter then have you looked at other cars (2 years old ish)? You might be surprised at what you can get insured with.

Im looking for a late 11 early 12 Polo :)

You absolutely set on a newish car? You'll suffer a few bumps/scrapes, all new drivers have their moments, anyone who says otherwise is vain.

Depreciation is dead money too. A £1500 car can't possibly depreciate more than a £10k car, plus your insurance will tumble after the first couple of years

As I will be driving my Girlfriends Peugeot 107 for around 2 months I am not too worried as these cars are cheap to insure and a few companies do touch up paint kits for them if I were to bump anything.

In the case of an actual crash, I am more likely to hit another driver due to low experience then I am to just driving off the road as I know most of the roads like the back of my hand so I know where to slow dramatically. If I do have an actual crash, it will not matter If im in a £500 car or my girlfriends £9K 107, as it will have to go through insurance either way as the other driver will claim. I would rather crash and be safe than crash and be seriously injured as pointed out :)

Try running quotes for a whole range of cars..

I don't buy the whole 'you'll scrape/crash/dent it' argument.

The argument I'd put forward is if you buy 1.2 10k car and are a 'car enthusiast' as you put it, you'll want to replace it in around a year's time and will have taken a huge hit in depreciation.

Try and find a happy medium where it's a ~2-4k car with ~2-3k insurance. It will depreciate less.

Well done on passing your test.

Well thats the idea of going for the 1.2TSI, should have a fair bit of poke to it so it will at least last me a few years then I want to do a larger step up, as in 3 years I get my apprenticeship training bond of around £6K. So selling the Polo in 3 Years for hopefully £5-6k will give me £11k to get something Japanese, insure it and do a few tweaks too while still having money left to go towards a mortgage deposit :)

That's not the argument that bledd. was putting forward.

As a car enthusiast you will get bored of that Polo within a year, not three.

If you are a car enthusiast you won't notice any "poke" from that car after a short amount of time from it. You will straight away, you are coming from a Pug 107 after all. But once that dies down...

I'm all over the Polo idea, but not if you're into cars.

You misinterpreted my point

You misinterpreted my point

I understand your point. After owning it a year I will likely get it remapped and lowered on GTI/Ebach Springs and dampers. You can can get an extra 25Bhp from a remap and up the torque considerably. After a year like that I will look in to getting a new car. I would then have to sell the Polo and settle finance. I went in to VW yesterday during my 3 hour free and I was told I can get a new 1.2TSI for the price im aiming, so resale price will be higher as it will be 13 plate with 20K less mileage. After selling at hopefully £7k+ and settling finance I will hopefully have around £11K including apprenticeship bond. By then I can drive my girlfriends car for a bit waiting for the 21yr old insurance barrier and get something rear wheel drive :)

I do not wish to have an interim "quick" car between my first car and the one im hoping for at 21 as I do not want to wreck my chances of cheap insurance by driving like a **** in something cheap and not caring as I have not put a lot of money in to it and end up pranging it around a lamppost.

Did you get an insurance quote on a remapped, modified Polo 1.2 TSI for a 19-20 year old?

Did you ask VW whether this would void the warranty, you know, that thing you're paying over the odds for in the first place?

/rhetorical questions.

Don't be silly, it makes perfect sense.

Buy nearly new for your first car > mod it (ruining residual value for 99% of potential buyers and costing a fair whack too) > sell for a huge loss and buy some Jap scrap in a few years

Don't you see the logic? :p
